Summary: In the book Old Yeller, by Fred Gipson, Old Yeller is a dog who protects and helps Travis Coates and his family when Papa goes off on a cattle drive. When there is danger Old Yeller would be the one who comes in and saves the day. Mama is Travis and Arliss’s mother and takes care of them when Travis’s father leaves. Arliss is Travis’s brother and is adventurous and playful, which sometimes gets him in trouble and danger. Bud Searcy and his daughter Lisbeth are neighbors and when the Travis family were struggling, they come and help them. Burn Sanderson is a new to the place and is there original owner of Old Yeller. Lisbeth gives them a visit and stays there to help them with their chores. Couple days later, their milking cow, comes back after being come for days and is weak and looks like she has hydrophobia. The bull comes and also has it. They decide to bring it out of their farm and burn them. While their at it, Old Yeller, who is badly hurt follows them and a wolf with hydrophobia comes and attacks them. Old Yeller fights with wolf and Travis takes his gun and takes a shot at the wolf. He kills him, but the wolf scratches Old Yeller and Travis is forced to kill him. Lisbeth brings her best pup and gives it to Travis. Travis is still heart broken that he had to kill Old Yeller. Days later, Papa comes back with a beautiful horse for Travis. They talk about what happened while he was gone and he tells him to let it all go and go on. Travis lets it go and goes on. His pup comes out with a piece of bread in his mouth and reminds him of Old Yeller eating all the meat.

The setting of Old Yeller is in a small town in central Texas in the late 1860's. A 14 year old boy named Travis must take care of his family when his papa goes to take cattle to the cattle market because they’re in need of money. That morning a stray dog arrives and when Travis goes to get some of his family’s very small food supply he finds it missing and the stray very full nearby. He goes to kick the dog but his brother, Arliss, starts throwing rocks at Travis for kicking “his dog”. His mama sides with Arliss and lets him keep the dog.
Throughout the book, Bud is determined to find the man who he thinks is his father. This illustrates the theme of the importance of family. Bud finds out the Herman E. Calloway is not his father, but his grandfather. Bud then is left to wonder why his mother ran away from her family, and if she was unhappy enough to run away, why did she keep flyers of her father and his band? These questions once

From reading the first act we are introduced to the seemingly main characters; Ruth, Walter, Beneatha, Travis, and Mama. We get a basic understanding of their ideas, beliefs, principles, personalities, and priorities. Ruth and Walter are the parents of Travis. We don’t get to see a lot of Travis’ personality in the first act, but I feel that he is like many other kids, absorbed in his own life and maybe even a little bit unaware of the family’s income (“Teacher say we have to.”
With Ponyboy and Johnny being the nice kids they are the tell Dallas to leave them along making get upset and leaving. After that the girls hang around with them for awhile until their boyfriends show up drunk and angry that two other guys are talking to their girls. The girls go home with them and Ponyboy and Johnny leave. Later that night they run into them again and they remember them starting a fight. Bob one of the Socs gets killed in the fight by Johnny in fear that he was going to kill Ponyboy.

He is the ¨old swamper ¨ at the ranch where most of the story takes place, it is clearly shown that he is the ¨underdog¨, and plays little to no importance at the ranch.
