Experience is an important factor which influences the attitude of nursing students toward older people. A study done on subjects in Norway and United States, “Nursing students had a positive attitude towards the elderly.” (Mc Cracker, 1995). Although these studies are old, we used it to draw a comparison from very old studies to more current studies to note the consistency, fill any gaps between 1995 and 2014 and they were the only articles on positive attitudes possessed by nursing students towards older adults. Their positive attitudes were contrary to how they perceived their respective societies to view older adults. “Close contact with grandparents and the number clinical hours spent with the elderly can influence students attitudes towards …show more content…
(2000), “Nursing students with little or no previous experience of clinical nursing had more unfavorable attitudes toward older people than the fourth-year nursing students, who were at the end of their education and had both theoretical and clinical experiences from various specialties.” Older persons usually need care from health care providers in their homes or in specialized care settings if their health deteriorates with advanced age. In a Sweden study conducted by it was found that “Age, gender and experience were factors that influenced attitude toward older people in the studied groups of nursing students and registered nurses.” (Söderhamn, et al, 2000). The result of the study revealed, “Older nursing students were more favorable toward older people than the students who were younger than 25 years.” (Söderhamn, et al, 2000). Several international studies have established that older age groups of nursing students show more optimistic attitudes towards older people than younger nursing students do.
Williams, Anderson, and Day (2007) stated, “Nursing student display positive attitudes towards the elderly and this influence the nursing care given to the elderly. The care for the elderly given by nursing students in their final year can be influence by the level of knowledge in gerontology and also personal experience with these individuals

Researcher used the following instruments to gather data from the sample: “Kogan’s attitude towards old people scale (contains 17 pairs statements related to the elderly. Options such as: strongly disagree, slightly disagree, slightly agree, agree or strongly agree were place at the end of each statement; subjects were asked to select one), visual analogue scale (a 100 millimetres line placed beside each option and subjects were ask to make a X to correspond with the number of the elderly person in the past with whom they had experience (except in their nursing education), a request for a descriptive paragraphs and demographic data questions.” (Mc Cracker, 1995).While comparing nursing students with the above mentioned tools, the results were similar and the attitude of nursing students towards the elderly is solely dependent on these variables: level of educational program, past family experiences, number of past experience, the amount of lecture time spent earning about the elderly and the amount of clinical time spent with the elderly. Researchers choose to gather their information from their subjects with a quantitative or both qualitative and quantitative approaches (triangulation). “Quantitative approach involves numerical representation, while qualitative is mostly subjective and getting feedback from samples. Hence, triangulation is the use of both
My professional history includes positions such as nursing in my country as well as a staff in Hollydale Lodge, a low care nursing house in Melbourne. As a nurse in my country, I can observe the dangerous signals on the patients. When I work in Hollydale Lodge, I understand the procedure of living in a nursing home. Some duties are similar to accomplish as in a high care nursing home. In addition, after the placement of aged care, I can assist the residents successfully.
Nursing is one profession that places the importance helping others above all else. The issue is that some people will not allow themselves to be helped. The nurturing trait is found in many women which will cause them to act as a mother figure to a certain degree. On the other hand, many men will not seek help since it may be seen as a sign of weakness. Regardless, people are inherently kind, but their environments sometimes alter or solidify the level of kindness that they show to
During my visit to Oak Crest Village, I had the pleasure of interviewing a retired nurse. To avoid releasing too much personal information, I will refer to my interviewee as Mrs. B. Mrs. B is a 76 years old female born in 1939 right here in the state of Maryland. She started her nursing education through a diploma program at Mercy Hospital. Mrs. B stated that her nursing program was on the job training. She spent little time in the classroom and the rest was all hands on training completed during patient care.
Time feels accelerated when I see my grandparents as though I am seeing them in a time-lapsed movie. Aside from the additional wrinkles, slower movement, and frailty that comes with aging, observing them, I have come to realize that life is short, perhaps too short. They have lived in my house throughout my life, and being close with them from a young age has given way to listening to many important life lessons, sometimes wanting to listen willfully and other times forcing myself to do so. One thing I have come to understand is that the advice and experiences of one’s elders serves an important function, to impart wisdom. They recommended to me to pursue my passions, so during my college career, I became involved in the Pre-health Professions
The result shows that 46 or 92% of the elderlies wished that they had more respect to themselves. Forty or 80% of them said that they sometimes pity themselves while 34 or 68% of them perceived that they have little or sometimes nothing to help their family and friends. In addition, 33 or 66% of elderlies said that they are not happy with their accomplishments in life while 32 or 64% of them perceived that they do not have capabilities and good qualities that they can be proud of and shared that they find it difficult to accept the changes happening in themselves at the present moment. Moreover, 28 or 56% of the elderlies shared that they often think and wish that they are in other people’s condition while half of them (50%) think and feel that they are useless. Further, despite of the adversities experienced in later life, 32 or 64% of elderlies didn’t think that they
Philosophy of Nursing Everyone’s values and beliefs about the profession of nursing are all different. The four concepts of nursing are interrelated and all mean something different to every person, too. Throughout this paper, I will be reflecting on my values and beliefs about nursing through the four concepts while comparing them to a nursing theorist with views that are most similar to my own.
Change commonly derives from conflict, and if this study can reveal some of the underlying difficulties within certain facilities, I think it could lead to a modification in the overall effectiveness of caretakers and the satisfaction of patients and family members. This study currently would cause great interest amongst other cities due to the sheer amount of people entering the elderly population in the next decade. We must figure out how to fix current social problems in health care for the next generation of elderly people to continue positively with such a large aging population. This study is a simple way to understand how one detail can have lasting effects on another. For example, studying the effects of how the level of care in relation to satisfaction will in turn show how facilities can be modified and improved due to a better understanding of a population and their needs as a whole.
Caring for The Individual: An Examination of Personal Nursing Philosophy Arianna Mailloux 400164224 NURSING 2AA3 Ashley Collins Harris February 19, 2018 As a novice nurse, developing and understanding of ones’ own personal feelings about nursing is important to help shape your clinical practice. Within this paper I will examine my personal assumptions, beliefs and values of the four nursing paradigms to develop a personal philosophy of nursing. This philosophy will be aligned with a known nursing theory and the comparisons will be discussed. Section I: Personal Philosophy of Nursing Person
A nurse must be able to perform activities like moving a patient, lifting heavy equipment, being on their feet for much of their shift, etc. The nursing profession can be very taxing on a person’s body and society as a whole is seeing the effects of this. Older nurses who have been in the field for a long time are no longer able to perform these tasks and it is causing them to change their area of expertise, or even leave their profession entirely. This has negatively impacted effective health care delivery and proper patient-centered care because these nurses are not able to effectively help their patients. Research shows that there are a large amount of nurses that are near or at the retirement age.
Health care practitioners most see things from the older person’s perspectives by showing compassion when delivering care to the patient along side emotional support
Now nurses have many roles, such as care takers, decision makers, advocates and teachers and they often assume several roles at the same time. Because of the diversity of nursing role nurses need a philosophy of nursing to guide their practice. The practice of nursing is the care of patients through a professional interpersonal relationship. Nurses apply behavioural scientific principles, biologic scientific principles, and principles of humanism in a
Nursing is a responsibility to provide the finest care regardless of the patient’s age, race, religion, sex, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or their past. Nurses must keep up to date on education, new processes, policies and keep informed about new laws and regulations in healthcare, so outstanding healthcare can be administered. As a nurse, you have undertaken a responsibility to provide people the finest quality care that can possibly receive. It is a nurses’ duty to follow the code of ethics, to act
I believe that the solutions are effective because a lot of people are not able to afford care services for their parents or grandparents although they wish to take care of seniors. Also, some people do not understand the importance of giving attention and listening to elderly’s views. This book parallels with the course objectives of our HSM 220, “Aging in America” class. We learned that aging population is growing rapidly, and there is a need to promote well-being for age-wise citizens in our society. The Age of Dignity book helps us understand the aging process and encourages us to appreciate the multi-disciplinary approach to health of the elderly.
It has two types: positive and negative attitudes (Sahini, 2007). A positive attitude is a mental phenomenon in which the central idea is that one can increase achievement through optimistic thought process. Negative attitude, on the other hand, is characterized by a great disdain for everything; someone who constantly points out thenegativeineverythingincludingfacialexpression(frowning, grimaces), posture, point of views, etc. Nurses’ attitudes toward patients are often influenced by the particular disease or problemaclientpresents. Nursesandotherclinical professionals often hold negative attitudes toward individuals with substance use problems and mentally ill patients, and this may significantly influence the quality of care delivered to these clients (Chang & Yang,
My philosophy of nursing is a statement I will stand by as a nursing student and as a graduate nurse and will continue to incorporate it into my daily care. In my eyes, nursing is the ability to provide safe, holistic care to all people regardless of their age, race, gender, social status, or sexuality. Nursing is a profession in which it is essential to be caring and respectful of all patients in which they may be experiencing the most difficult health situations of their lives and to provide culturally safe care. My values of nursing shape my practice as a nurse and are affected by my views on health.
