In the book One of us is next, Karen M. McManus uses multiple first-person points of view to develop and further emphasize the theme that social media has a huge impact on the lives of teens. Teens today are greatly impacted and affected by the presence of social media. The author, Karen M. McManus, utilizes multiple first-person points of view to further emphasize and show the effect social media has. One example of this is when Phoebe says, “‘ I send Emma another text message ‘ Emma I’m sorry please respond I miss you”’, ( McManus 67). This text message was sent a few days after a school-wide “ Truth or Dare” group chat reveals that Phoebe slept with her sister Emma’s boyfriend while they were still together. He is a disappointment to his father, and his mom is never around. He has 4 older sisters, all being at least 9 years older than him. The only person he has is his ex-girlfriend and now best friend Maveve. Their relationship ended well with both of them agreeing that they were just better off being friends. This all changed however when the truth-or-dare group chat reveals another secret. The text reads “ Maeve dumped Knox because he couldn't get it up”,(McManus 150). This shows how profound of an impact the presence of social media has on teens and their relationships. For Knox, his friendship with Maeve is everything she is all he has and they have been friends forever. The truth or dare text chain ruined what they had, and has a lasting impact on Knox and his mental health. Not only did he get humiliated by her and find out the real reason she broke up with him, but he was also bullied and made fun of in school for the rest of the book. This is not even the most extreme effect that social media has on the lives of teens. Social media has such a big effect on the lives of teens that it can sometimes end up taking one. The text reads, “ Brandon died trying to take a shortcut through the construction site, concrete slab broke when he jumped onto it crushing him to death. “ freak accident”, was the story until they recovered his phone. “ DARE: jump onto the concrete slab below you’’’,(McManus 248). This shows that social media has a huge impact and influence on the thoughts and actions of teens. Brandon Weber the starting quarterback for their high school football team took a shortcut through a construction site because he got a dare to do it, and jump onto one of the concrete platforms. The concrete platform he jumped to had not had the supports put in yes, causing it to break as soon as he landed on his taking his life. If it weren't for the presence of social media Brandon would have never done this, or even begun to think about doing it. The only reason he did is that when you don't do the dare, the truth or dare group chat reveals a secret about you.
