Piaget and Maslow: Teaching the whole child Exceptional educators keep their fingers on the pulse of what their students need, in order to teach them effectively. Examining Piaget and Maslow’s theories, and applying them to the classroom will facilitate achieving this goal. Considering Piaget’s focus on development, and Maslow’s prioritization of human needs, one can integrate these ideas into classrooms and lesson plans that are optimized for student success. Piaget’s theory of cognitive development Piaget asserts, children are born with inherited scripts, called schema, these schema are building blocks for cognitive development. As a child grows, he acquires more of these building blocks; moreover, these building blocks become more complex as the child progresses through different stages in development (Huitt, Hummel 2003).

The insight that the EYLF sets out to achieve for cultural competence is ongoing learning and reflective practise. Educators need to engage and foster ongoing learning that is required and inclusion from other professionals when engaging in critical reflection. Critical reflection on matters such as professional reading, networking with other professionals in that same field, and learning from and connecting with families and the local community. The reflection includes reflection on relationships and partnerships with families, the extent to which diversity is respected and the curriculum supports high expectations and equity and also each staff members level of cultural competence. The EYLF also encourages children to develop positive relationships with others, and to respect diversity in order to develop social and civic skills, to establish and maintain respectful and trusting relationships with their peers and educators.
Appropriate social and emotional skills help children develop the skills they need for cooperation, following directions, self-control and paying attention. These skills are innate, however in the school setting have become a part of everyday learning. Especially since social and emotional competencies are critical for children 's success, in school as well as in other settings, and later phases of life into adulthood. (Darling, 2016, p. 3). Developing social-emotional skills in children help them persist on challenging tasks, and effectively seek help when they need it along with exhibiting thoughtfulness in their actions.
As an educator codes of ethics which serves to guide meaningful conduct should include being honest, trustworthy and engaging in lifelong learning. I personally believe children should be treated as if they are your own, if any child comes to school looking sad immediate attempts must be made to find out what is the cause .As a teacher one needs to be aware of learning, motivation, behavior, and development theories in order to relate to my students and push them to reach their full potential. It is the duty of the teacher to see that all the students are being motivated; this is only fair to the students. They deserve one time and full attention in regards to their education. One also wants to create a classroom that is a safe learning environment for all.
