Although there is ultimately a need for safety and protection, change does demand action. The two concepts are not mutually exclusive. The spread in popularity of social media has not only created safe spaces but has clearly produced an uprising of cyberactivism. The base of LGBT activism, in particular, is that at the root of all things – people are all people. Humans are all connected in some way and this connection is particularly noticeable through online relation chains. Through connections on social media, people become more and more aware that LGBT folk aren’t a separate entity and that all humans are connected. By hosting profile pictures and relationship links, “Facebook literally puts a human face on the LGBT civil rights movement” …show more content…
This statement is false. Activism over the internet is conducted by real, physical people and, just by that fact, effects the physical world by impacting the people who live within it. Online activism gives a chance for people who may not be in the traditional stream for politics to become increasingly involved with it by speaking to an increasingly growing audience. People who may have given up on the state of mainstream politics may find rekindled hope in online activism. For example, DeRay Mckesson – a civil rights activist who found his following through twitter, is running for mayor of Baltimore. Stating that “we cannot rely on traditional pathways to politics and the traditional politicians who walk that path” (Eligon), Mckesson displays how politics have evolved with technology and how the evolution of social media has allowed a new form of politicians, arising from the common people, to emerge. An additional example of online activism and politics causing a direct effect on mainstream politics can be found in a candidate for the United States presidency named Bernie Sanders. Sanders was originally given little notice by mainstream media (Whitacker), but as the internet spread information of his candidacy and built a support base around him, mainstream media had little choice but to give Sanders air-time. With the internet – it is both easy and, generally, free to find news specific to a certain community that is not overshadowed by news only about privileged groups. There are specific news sites completely dedicated to the LGBT community. For instance, the Advocate (Advocate) is a digital news source which provides daily coverage about the LGBT community. Due to the existence of these sites, people in the LGBT community can more easily find representation in the media and see that LGBT people are capable of achieving things just as well as others. An essential part of media, representation is what determines what a child views the world through. Media is supposed to reflect and represent real life in some way – stories, no matter what kind, are always about people. When a child views media and does not see themselves, that can severely limit what they feel they are capable of later in life. An example of this can be found in the gender gap in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. At a young age, girls are just as interested in STEM subjects as boys but the older they get and the more society and media disapproves, the more they reject STEM subjects (National Girls Collaborative). Who one believes they can be significantly impacts who they become. By creating representation for LGBT people, LGBT kids can feel as if they are able to achieve something outside of
When a child is born they go through the process of figuring out who they really are, as well as who they want to be. Society in many ways negatively impacts the freedom a child has whilst exploring this phase in life. It dictates what to do, and what not to do. Strong parental figures help shield young kids away from society at large and allow them to make their own decisions without any fear. Through reading the pieces “My son is Gay” and “I like to wear dresses” and Ivan Coyote we see how hatred directed towards children for just being themselves often discourages children from exploring their gender.
The feminist movement and the gay rights movement are two communities that have been fighting for their rights for a long time and are similar in many ways, yet different in many others. While they are both social movements, the feminist movement’s main focus is on women’s rights, while the gay rights movement’s main focus is on gay rights. Similar to each other or not, the two movements could (and do) benefit from each other. Both women and gay people have faced discrimination due to being seen as lesser in the eyes of society. However, the reasons for this discrimination they face/have faced are very different.
In this era of politics, social media has very high power and influence. Since our generation can’t seem to put down their phones or stop refreshing Facebook, many members of politics use their social media accounts to announce their opinions on certain topics. It could be said that the mass media has a “hold” over the political arena. Media can even “make or break” political careers or political parties. Thus, it becomes very important for political members to keep their social media accounts updated.
The LGBT people across the U.S.
1) The rights of LGBTQ (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer) citizens are a must, and it 's our responsibility to be on the right side of history. Even though gay marriage is legalized, there is still a long way to go with LGBT rights and State and Federal Law. 2) Discriminating against anybody based on their lifestyle is a violation of human rights, and protection of human rights is the soul of a healthy democracy. 3) We should help build hope and start to create a world where everyone can live without the constant fear of being discriminated based on who they are and who they love. 4) Powerful lessons we have learned from past human right movements is that the battles we fought were painful and tough, but in the end they brought sweeping changes in American society by making it more caring and just.
There is a general belief among social media detractors that this form of communication is dehumanizing. People who spend all of their time updating their social media platforms with 140 characters of thought will fail to recognize the nuance of a real issue. It is common for a person with a potentially controversial stance to be completely dehumanized by social media lynch mobs, who do not care about the nuances of his message, rather, simply want his/her life destroyed for daring to oppose the mainstream narrative. Whether the goals of this opposition are good or bad, their message is often contained within a social media bubble where the nuances are completely missed. This leads to arguments on social media that completely miss people’s real points and instead engage in fallacious arguments that wander off topic (Miller,
n today’s society the internet plays a huge role in the everyday lives of many people, therefore many individuals’ main form of communication is over sites like Facebook, and twitter. In Malcolm Gladwell’s essay, “Small Change, Why the Revolution will not be Tweeted,” he explores the different methods used by activists nowadays versus those used by the activists in the 1960s. Gladwell argues that social media is not an effective tool to initiate revolutionary movements or any change at all for that matter, based off its weak ties formed over different social networks. Gladwell illustrates multiple cases of protests and adds that without the assistance of social media, these protests were stronger, prearranged and based off deeper emotional ties. Throughout the article Gladwell continuously returns to the Civil rights movement and why it was effective.
In 2015, the Obergefell v. Hodges case ended the “state bans on same-sex marriage”, therefore legalizing same-sex marriage (Important Supreme Court Cases). Now, “same-sex couples can now receive the benefits...of marriage that were largely exclusive to heterosexual couples” (Koch). The ruling has led to the modern fight for gay civil rights. Exposure to the LGBTQ+ community, the southern “Bathroom Bills”, and other fights for transgender rights, and the press for more LGBTQ+ representation in the media has erupted from this case. Both rulings had very big impacts on their respective communities.
While I was walking through Fountain Square Mall, I passed by a lawyer’s office with this flyer from Prism Youth Community in the window. Before I even realized which organization created it, I was immediately drawn to the beautifully designed document. A second later, I was super excited to discover that it was created for the LGBTQA social group founded by one of my instructors, Laura Ingram. The designers have clearly identified and worked to produce a meaningful hierarchy of information for its audience. To a greater degree than many of the professional documents I’ve seen in community settings, this flyer apparently has specific, well-defined rhetorical purposes, likely due to the greater implications it could have for youth in the community
People once used to enslaved people and abused people who simply had different skin tones; they were not conceived as human under the law. Now as history has shown us, that wasn’t justice. In every civil rights conflict we are only able to recognize the just point of view years after the fact and when the next conflict comes along we are blind once again. (Amanda) As I’m writing down this paper we are repeating history once in for all. LGBT communities are just HUMANS who are
Social Media Activism Name Institution Social Media Activism Activism has been a part of the lives of many people across the world. As a result of the activism, people have been able to air their concerns thus pressurizing the authorities to act responsibly and in the right manner. Despite the objectivity homogeneity of both the past and present activism, there has been a difference brought by the emergence of the social media. In the present world, a majority of the weak in the society have turned into using the internet to air the concerns for the appropriate action to be taken. Therefore, the main aim of this assignment will be to discuss five important ideas as postulated by Gladwell in his article "Small Change: Why
Information and communication technology has seen lot of changes and advancements since the year 2000, key among them being the development of social media as a social influencer. It has become prominent parts of life for many young people today. We are all aware that social media has had a tremendous impact on our culture, in business, on the world-at-large and social media websites are some of the most popular haunts on the internet. Most people engage with social media without stopping to think what the effects are on our lives, whether positive or negative. Are we as society becoming more concerned with Facebook “friends” than we are with the people we interact with face-to-face in our daily lives?
In 2007, CNN stated a word “Youtube-ification of politics” prepared for the U.S. Presidential Primaries (Youtube and Policits). However, the impact of social media on politics can be either positive or negative. Social media can have a positive impact on politics when it is used properly. As people mentioned that social media is a free platform for sharing information, a tool of freedom and empowerment and a door of equality.
Social Media: Affects Relationships As technology progresses more and more, there have been great changes that have made our lives more easy and efficient. There are many advantages that technology has brought upon us, one in particular is the Internet. The Internet has allowed people to be connected quickly to information and be updated to the issues and happenings around us, but the social networks that have been invented to allow long distance connection have been resulting in negative outcomes for society and our generation. Social media gets in the way of building actual relationships, makes people become inauthentic about their lives and lowers their self-esteem, and has become a dangerous and threatening nature. During these days, it seems as if nobody can live without checking their social media accounts, whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.
Through the eyes of someone who hasn't experienced the direct effects of the discrimination that the LGBTQ community regularly faces. It is easy to dismiss their calls for help and rights as unnecessary. For the public is blinded by the great “strides” it has made from successful lawsuits to legalizing same sex marriage, that they have created a sort of equality facade were mainstream LGBT individuals are projected as the pinnacle of equality, even though this scenario can be the farthest truth to the average person who identifies as an LGBT individuals . The LGBT community is a wide community, according to the website “the daily beast” around 10 million Americans—4 percent of the population—now identify as LGBT (1). Based on the information,
