Despite their differences, traditional learning is superior to online learning. Face-to-face learning provides more opportunities to meet other students and build connections with professors. Online courses have higher withdrawal rates due to the lack of structure in the student’s schedule. Both online and face-to-face learning have financial complications like having constant access to a laptop or being able to get to and from the classes. Traditional learning provides students with a better social atmosphere for learning. When students physically go to class every day, they meet other students and build connections with them. Online students have to have constant access to computers or laptops, wi-fi, and applications like Microsoft Word to complete their day to day work. In an article written by Linda McCown, Blended Courses: The Best of Online and Traditional Formats, she stated, “Although they were comfortable with the technology, one third of the students in one university's blended learning initiative reported technical problems” (2010). Even with the ability to access the technology needed for their work, the students can still run into additional technical difficulties like websites crashing or difficulties with attaching their finished assignments to the website (McCown, 2010). Traditional learning needs to have access to the technology, but it is not needed for every single class. Most of the time, students who go physically go to class have the opportunity to live on campus instead of travelling to and from class each day. While living on campus comes with a price, it helps the students with transportation and provides another way to meet other students. Online students have to pay for the classes and the access codes for the online material needed. Traditional classes have higher completion rates due to attending multiple classes and having a set structure, so the students have to manage their time wisely. Both online and traditional classes have financial obstacles like access codes or books. In the future, face-to-face courses will continue, but slowly incorporate a bit of online assignments to become a blended class (Noble).
