Operational Definition
In operationalization, an operational definition is used to define variables in a scientific process. Operational definitions can be found not only in the sciences applications, but also in philosophy and the economy and therefore have an unrivaled variability in its application. The term operationalization The term operationalization appears from the book The Logic of Modern Physics (1927) from the author Pery Williams Bridgman. In his book Bridgman explains that by giving a construct an operational definition, their meaning is determined by their physical process. For example if someone wants to measure the temperature of water the process of measuring the water is explained in the physical properties of water heat …show more content…

For example if you wants to make assertions how many children are behaving good, so you need to determine first what exactly is meant with „behaving good " under the term . Every person has a clue what good behavior means but this is not sufficient for an empirical measurement of good behavior of children. Also the dictionary definition of good behavior is not adequate for making the term “good behavior” empirical comprehensive because you don’t have any measurements, a so called operator for good behavior in that definition. Therefore first variables or indicators will be defined who a characteristic for the observed subject. In this case it could be “number of times the child obeyed his parents” or “Number of penalties it received”. Operationalization is defined as making a construct empirical detectable and on that account measureable. By operationalizing the measurements of an empirical phenomenon is now possible and therefore for other people …show more content…

This leads to criteria for the theory. The practical benefit is intended to be that theories with a few simple assumptions can be more easily falsified than those with many and complex assumptions. Theories should not introduce more hypotheses and variables as needed, to deduce the facts to be explained adequately. This leads to criteria for the theory, how the assumptions and hypothesis should be constructed.
