The hypothesis that females have better oral hygiene and therefore better periodontal status conducted by many previous studies is not supported by the results of this study compared to a study conducted by Furuta in 2011[26]. Generally, the number of female participants (174) was much higher compared to male participants (76) and therefore the resulting difference of positive findings of gingival bleeding was 17.8% greater in females than males. This difference could also be attributed to unwillingness of male students to participate compared to females and their general lack of interest in the subject of oral hygiene. Occurrence of gingivitis in adulthood is difficult to be assessed worldwide as a result of the variances in study populations, genetics, and environmental factors. In addition, presence of different clinical methods for definition of gingivitis and absence of clear objective cut-off points between health and disease adds difficulty. Many previous epidemiological studies estimated that the prevalence of adult gingivitis varies from approximately 50-100% for dentate patients. In this study, the prevalence of gingivitis was 100% among the adult subjects aged between 18 and 40 years old.
Regarding gingival swelling in our study there were 67(26.9%) number of reports of gingival swelling with bleeding. This is compatible with the study by NW Savage, in 2010[37] which states that gingival swelling is a common reaction to plaque induced gingivitis.
As the table 8, indicates the highest number of people visited the dentist showed when they had bleeding while only few of them visited the dentist due to other problems. However in the study conducted by Ling Zhu in the year 2005[38] it was found that only 15% of the subjects visited the dentist due to bleeding.
In our current study the sample was medical students so they were more aware of the implications of gingival bleeding that is why our results show they visited the dentist more frequently with the complaint of gingival
