Good oral hygiene is an important part of a healthy body and social life. Between 35 to 45 percent of the world’s population have some degrees of bad breath or halitosis. An estimated 80 million Americans suffer from chronic bad breath, while 99 percent of people have dragon breath in the morning. But there is an estimated 0.3 and 3 percent of the population that do not know what extra-oral halitosis is.

Halitosis is a symptom of a health condition characterized by an unpleasant odor in the breath. The range of health conditions that can be associated with bad breath is from psychological disorders to metabolic diseases. Bad breath can be divided into two types – intra-oral and extra-oral.

- Intra-oral halitosis is referred to bad breath caused by an underlying problem within the oral cavity. Bacteria commonly cause intra-oral halitosis by producing foul-smelling gases called volatile sulfur compounds. About 90 percent of individuals with bad breath are classified as intra-oral. Other causes include gum inflammation or gum disease, accumulation of food and bacteria on the tongue, dental cavities and tooth decay, food particles, and xerostomia or dry mouth. …show more content…
