In 1993, twenty-four year old Piper Kerman flew to Belgium with a suitcase full of money that would be passed off to a West African drug lord. After that happened Kerman left the business and decided to turn herself in. In February of 2004, Kerman was named part of an international drug ring, and she was incarcerated at the age of thirty four. Sentenced to a year at a minimum security women's prison, Kerman set out to blend in the best she could to make her way through her sentence without causing any trouble. During her time Piper met people of all races, ages, religions, and walks of life. After she was released Kerman decided to compose a book about the people that she met in prison, the lessons that they taught her, and how they affected her outlook on life. After Piper got released she wanted to go right away and be with to the people who mean the most to her, her family and friends. Her family and friends were given a plethora of details about what she did that made her want to turn herself in. She was new on the outside and inside. Those prison walls were no longer confining her to be a certain person. On the day Piper got released she said that when she was the airport about to meet up with Larry she “turned and started walking briskly ahead of him. Ten yards farther, and I saw Larry, standing in front of the MCC, talking on his phone, until her turned and saw me. And then I was running, as fast as I could. No one could stop me” (295). This is an excellent statement that Piper made to show how she was excited to get her life back to normal. A new kind of normal, one full of paperwork and parole checkins. But it was her life.
