To determine the optimum conditions that extract the greatest volume of orange oil.
(a) Research background (introduction and problem statement) According to The Free Dictionary (2003), extraction can be defined as a separation procedure in which a substance is separated from its matrix using various methods. Extraction can be categorized into liquid-liquid extraction and solid phase extraction. When it comes to oil extraction, it can be elucidated as a process of isolating oil from fleshy fruits such as olive and avocado, seeds like sesame seed and peanuts, fruit peels such as lemon peels and orange peels as well as animal by-products (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2016). Due to the

Steam distillation is an efficacious way to extract orange oil as orange oil is immiscible with water. Moreover, the boiling point of orange oil is around 180°C. So, steam distillation is cost saving as the temperature of the system can be remained at boiling point of water, which requires less fuel for the steam boiler. Furthermore, by maintaining the temperature at the boiling point of water, the degradation of the extracted orange oil can be greatly reduced (Martin, n.d.). Steam distillation of orange oil is a method in which a mixture of orange peels and distilled water is boiled in a distillation apparatus, causing the globules of oil in the peels to burst out from the cell walls due to increasing heat and kinetic energy. The oil is then carried by the steam into a Liebig condenser. The flow of cold water into the Liebig condenser causes the steam containing the orange oil to condense into liquid form. After that, the liquid is poured into a separatory funnel to separate the oil from the water which is known as “hydrosol” (Misty Rae Cech, …show more content…
According to their results, 1.2%-2.1% of transparent essential oil was extracted by distillation process whereas compression process extracted 1.0%-1.6% of flaxen essential oil but the odour of the compressed essential oil was closer to the fragrance of real citrus fruit compared to distilled essential oil. Therefore, they concluded that compression process is the most suitable method to extract large-scale continuous citrus essential oil. However, our group decided to use steam distillation method to extract the orange oil because our experiment does not require large-scale continuous production. Furthermore, based on their research, steam distillation yielded more orange oil compared to compressing method, meaning that if we use compressing method, we have to prepare more orange peels for our experiment. This is costly and unproductive compared to steam distillation

For example, Vesalius’s book De Humani Corporis Fabrica was written and published in 1543, therefore the primary source will include relevant and appropriate information form the time period. On the other hand, The History of Science from the Ancient Greeks to the Scientific Revolution by Ray Spangenburg and Diane K. Moser was published in 1993 therefore, it cannot have all the correct details from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The text can be biased because of the personal views of the author, and the time in which it was written could be influential because more accurate information can be discovered after the text is published. For instance, after William Harvey identified the parts and functions of the circulatory system, doctors and scientists developed new ideals based off of Harvey’s theories. Articles tend to be unreliable because journalists often give their impressions of the situation to please readers.
Have you ever had a treasure that you’ve kept precious to you?Do you think that you are the only one that knows it’s true worth. Well I disagree with that statement. Lemon Brown, who is a old man, who has a treasure that only he knows the real worth of it. At the beginning of the story, Greg wants to join the scorpions basketball team.
Is Rockefeller a Modest Philanthropist captain of industry? You can clearly identify Rockefeller to be a captain of industry, in a particular quote Rockefeller states the following “I do not think that there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance it overcomes almost everything even nature.” In which this quote is a big significance to Rockefeller being viewed as a captain of industry, Rockefeller achieved his fortune through the oil industry in which still stands today. the way oil in transported and as today oil is cheaper to transport more efficient easy to distribute as there are many products that are obtained from the raw materials of oil from detergents and makeup to fertilizers and pesticides
Ocho Apellidos Vascos is a quirky love story between Amaia and Anxton (whose actual name is Rafa). It begins in a Sevillan bar where a Basque woman is out with her friends. She’s very drunk, and has obviously been having a pretty terrible time since her husband-to-be left her with a large sum of debt. An Andalusian man, Rafa, is on stage telling rude jokes about Basque women. The Basque woman, Amaia tells him off.

This liquid is mixed using large paddles to mix air into the mixture and oxidize it. When the indoxyl is oxidized, it turns into indigotin. Indigotin is denser than the rest of the liquid, so it settles to the bottom of the vat. This pigment is then sent to the third and lowest vat. To prevent the pigment from fermenting, it is heated in the vat.
When blending, it is good to have in mind that oils from the same family blend well together; spices and citrus also blend well together; woody scents and citrus are a good combination; certain oils like peppermint, fennel, tea tree, clove, thyme and camomile, tend to take over any scent combination; menthol and flowery scents don’t tend to make a pleasing combination; many oils (jasmine, rose, orange, sandalwood, ylang-ylang) smell good on their own and do not need to be combined for a pleasing scent. Q15. Describe the procedure for storing essential oils. All essential oils must be stored in glass bottles, away from heat and direct sunlight.

INTRODUCTION A gas chromatograph (GC) can be utilized to analyze the contents of a sample quantitatively or in certain circumstances also qualitatively. In the case of preparative chromatography, a pure compound can be extracted from a mixture. The principle of gas chromatography can be explained as following: A micro syringe is used to inject a known volume of vaporous or liquid analyte into the head or entrance of a column whereby a stream of an inert gas acts a carrier (mobile phase). The column acts as a separator of individual or chemically similar components.

Thanks to the boiling chips, the heat is evenly distributed within the flask, which permits a more controlled boil and eliminates the possibility of the liquid in the flask bumping into the condenser[5]. The tedious distillation process is rather simple: the beverage evaporates in the distillation flask and, having no where else to go, enters the condensing tube, where it cools down and is converted back into liquid form. From there on, this liquid flows into the final container, a graduated cylinder [preferably in an ice bath]. The extracted distillate is otherwise known as ethanol, a clear, colorless, flammable liquid, produced through the process of glucose fermentation and frequently used as an intoxicating agent in liquors[6].
