Joseph Nye's book, The Powers to Lead (2008), analyzes the progress that has taken place in leadership practices. The author challenges the reader critically to re-examine some of the usually accepted knowledge in leadership, by introducing other new techniques. He says that leaders need to get a new insight into contextual intelligence, power, styles and objectives of leadership needed to enhance the modern democracy in organizations. He, therefore, rejects the traditional leadership model, which is founded on the heroic military power technique (Nye, 2008). Contextual information merges emotional intelligence with cognitive skills that are acquired through experience. The leaders are required to willing and flexible in adapting their style to the situation and hence satisfy the needs of the different stakeholders. Leaders must work within five important contextual intelligence dimensions: the flow of information, crisis and time urgency, the needs and demands of subjects, culture, and the distribution of power. The author discusses situations in which leaders are challenges of passing their leadership skills in the different cultural limitations, which are evident in the public and private administration. Nye uses the example of James Webb to illustrate the deficiencies that contextual intelligence suffers when a leader shifts ton institutions that look similar. James Webb was a Bureau of Budget director and proved ineffective when working at the state department. However, James Webb excelled at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as the Director. Though this another example, Nye demonstrates that contextual intelligence is a complex and nuanced skill. He further explains that bad leaders can be characterized by many traits that include intemperance, rigidity, incompetence, and ethical lapses. He outlines the many contradictions that encircle the leader’s private and public morality. He finally directs 's attention to the Madisonian government that builds structures that allowed aa voice to the individuals who opposed a leader. Good leaders are not limited or constrained by the limitations, but they are responsible for building and maintaining systems that uphold high standards of efficacy and ethics.
