Organizational Behaviour is a study that shows the influence that individuals have on behaviour within an organization. It demonstrates how people act when being exposed to different organizations and structures. It uses information acquired from individuals and how the organization’s structure would affect their behaviour. This in turn, would ensure that organizations are working successfully. (Stephen & Timothy, Chapter 1: What is Organisational Behaviour?, 2013)
In South Africa, the post office has been striking due to job dissatisfaction. Employees are demanding a 15-percentage pay increase and casual staff want permanent employment. In this stage, the conflict is the most visible. Negotiations start to happen, and both parties start to get emotional about the problem. Conflict management techniques are introduced in this stage, to help resolve the conflict. Problem solving is used to encourage both parties to discuss their views on the problem, and try to come up with a mutual agreement for resolution. In the South African Post Office system, this stage hasn’t been implemented yet, as both parties are stubborn and are not willing to compromise. There are two approaches used for negotiation or bargaining, distributive bargaining and integrative bargaining. (Stephen & Timothy, Chapter 14: Conflict and Negotiation, 2013)
Distributive bargaining functions under a zero-sum condition, this means that any gain that the one party would receive comes at the expense of the other party. As one party benefits, the other party would suffer.
