Abstract Fashion is the main instrument of the appearance contributing socio-cultural identity of a person. It is how we present ourselves to the world, and it reveals facets of our culture, class, and self-identity. Fashion is taking an important place in our day-to-day lives. In this paper, I have tried to cover the origin of fashion in India and West, and the various kinds of dresses found all over the world. Keywords- Fashion, Gender, Identity 1. 3. Evolution of Fashion in India Traditional clothing in India greatly varies across different parts of the country and is influenced by local culture, geography, climate and rural/urban settings. Earlier people used to cover themselves with leaves and then came the concept of draping. Popular styles of dress include garments such as sari for women and dhoti or lungi for men. Stitched clothes are also popular such as churidar or salwar-kameez for women with dupatta thrown over shoulder completing the outfit. Salwar is often loose fitting while churidar is tighter. The rise of fashion blogs; the origins of catwalk shows and their participation in the definition of modernity; the creative economy and globalized circulation of fashion: these are only a few topics on growing academic literature on fashion (Lewis, 2013 ; Jobling, 1999 ; Cole, 2009 ; Rocamora, 2012 ; Evans, 2013 ; Rabine, 2002 ). 4.
