Orson Scott Card is an American Science-Fiction author known for both his short stories and novels. One of his most popular novels, Enders Game, will be the focus of this research paper. Ender’s Game is one of Orson Scott Card’s first science fiction works; it was originally written as a short story and was later developed into a novel. His family, his life experiences and his religious and moral beliefs influence the writings of Orson Scott Card, such as Enders Game, heavily.
Orson Scott Card was born in Richland, Washington in 1951 to Willard Richards Card and Peggy Jane Park. He was the third of six children. Orson grew up in a Mormon household. He was only two generations removed from Mormon pioneers and his family was very religious.

Shortly before his graduation Card left BYU and went on a two-year long mission to Brazil for the Mormon Church. Card fell in love with Brazilian culture and became fluent in Portuguese during his time in Brazil. When he returned home he finished his bachelors in theatre and began a production company that produced plays at “The Castle”, an outdoor theatre in Orem. The production company eventually failed. Card needed to pay back the debt from the theater company and he found a job at the BYU Press. It was during this time that Card started writing science fiction stories, including a short story that would eventually become Enders Game. The short story eventually saw a profit and Orson became employed at the official magazine of the Mormon Church called “The Ensign”. Card fell in love with Kristine Allen; and they married in May 1977. In 1978 their first child, Michael Geoffrey, was born followed by a daughter, Emily Janice. Orson and Kristine moved around often until they ended up in Greensboro, North Carolina. The last of their 3 children - Charles Benjamin, Zina Margaret, and Erin Lousisa - were born in Greensboro. Orson named his children after the authors that he admired such as Geoffrey Chaucer and Charles Dickens. Two of their children passed away, Erin Lousia died shortly after her birth, and Charles Benjamin died when he was 17 of symptoms related to cerebral palsy. In the book, Ender’s Game, written by Orson Scott Card, Ender is expected to be the commander of the human space fleet with the goal to defeat an alien species named the buggers. On his journey to command stardom, Ender faces many problems in battle school and back home on Earth. Choosing between the book and movie, the book illustrated a better and more exciting reading experience than the movie. There are many major themes in the Enders Game.
In the classic novel Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, Andrew “Ender” Wiggin is a young man who lives in a futuristic world where hostile extraterrestrial beings known as “buggers” have attacked Earth twice, and they almost wiped out mankind in the Second Invasion. The International Fleet (I.F.) plans to attack the bugger world a third time to wipe them out for good, and they take Ender at the young age of 6 to a space station called Battle School to prepare him and other children to possibly graduate to Command School and fight the buggers. Throughout the novel, Card develops Ender’s character traits using influences from other characters, plot development, and Ender changing as he grows older. At the beginning of the story, Ender is 6 years old and wears a small device on his neck, monitoring his behavior to find out whether he is what they need to fight the buggers.

Alger was born into a regular sized family with two brothers and a sister, Olivia Augusta Cheney, who was a well-known woman in her prime. In Orson Scott Card’s book Ender’s Game, Ender is continually set up against impossible odds by the International Fleet, which is part of a plan to train Ender to fight in the Third Invasion and end the bugger wars forever. Ender’s trials are portrayed more convincingly in the book, as the book shows him struggling with the expectations placed upon him more so than in the movie. An important theme in Ender’s Game is that Ender is continually kept in the dark about the events happening around him. This theme is prevalent throughout the book, and sets the stage for the book’s climax, the Third Invasion.
Books are the ideal way to introduce a reader to the many morals of the human society.
