I agree that Oscar’s fate is frustrating for readers who hoped that he’d somehow, against all odds, be the De Leon who got the fairy tale ending. Oscar deserved so much better than what he got, and in some way I feel his family was entitled to the fairy tale ending that never came. Having said this, I believe that Oscar improvised his own fairy tale ending, and, therefore, he was only cheated out of the fairy tale ending his readers wanted him to have. Moreover, the way I look at it, Oscar took a situation that was far from ideal and made the most out of it. He love in the company of the prostitute Ybon, who made him happy in spite of her flaws. In addition, Oscar got to go on the adventure he’d spent his life dreaming of from the confines
