City council meetings are an important aspect of community and engagement. This representative form of government is responsible for coming to consensus on various agenda items as well as hearing questions, concerns, and demands from members of the community. City council meetings tend to have a list of consent agenda items, which are items that are voted on by the council in a single roll call vote. Members of the community or council have the ability to request an item on the agenda be removed for discussion. Typically items that tend to be more controversial are removed for discussion.

It was also an interesting experience even though this particular meeting did not have much controversy or debate that took place. During the city council meeting a variety of things were on the agenda, but one item that particularly stood out was the bike event since one of the council member had questions regarding this event. The bike event refers to a motorcycle event that is taking place in Oshkosh for the very first time. There were questions regarding the safety and any overall problems that could result from an event such as this. Since motorcycle riders tend to have a bad rap because of motorcycle gangs, but The sheriff of Oshkosh assured that this particular event would be safe with no resulting problems since he did research and talked to other cities that have had this type of event in the past. This is a good example of a member of council looking out for the community and making sure that nothing bad could potentially come from events that take place within the city limits. As a member of City council it is their job to look out for the community’s best interest and this is something that I observed from the council
It is a routine matter, but Obrecht took time to explain the County Home’s bills are paid out of a levy fund. When Planning Department Director Betsy Sparr rose to talk about a resolution dealing with a change to a parcel of property, she ended up giving a short lesson on the Planning Commission, its makeup and the role it plays in reviewing land use changes. Just as Underwood encouraged the students to have a voice in the structure of government through voting, Obrecht also informed them there are other ways to get involved in government without being elected. The commissioners make appointments of volunteers to several boards, like the Planning Commission, the Mental Health & Recovery Board of the Board of Developmental Disabilities.
Last year the local government of my small town, Mclendon Chisholm, deliberately Increased the property tax by 15% without the consent of citizens, and the furtive city council and mayor were both accused of corruption and using the money for their own benefits (e.g. Taking long priceless vacations) . One citizen-- a Robert Steinhagen--Created this website where he wrote articles about the political situation in Mclendon Chisholm; his doctrine won over the people of the town and with much hard work and perspiration he and his running mates took

The event that I have chosen is the Freedom Rides, which started May 4, 1961 and ended December 10, 1961. The Freedom Rides were inspired by the Greensboro Sit-ins, and started with 13 African American and Caucasian protestors riding buses into the segregated south to challenge the lack of enforcement to the Supreme Court ruling that segregated buses were unconstitutional. While the activists were peaceful the local law enforcement and people against their message were not. The activists were beaten at several stops along their journey from Anniston to Birmingham with chains, bricks, and bats by Ku Klux Klan (KKK) members in Alabama, and activists that were injured would be refused hospital treatment. Planning is transforming socially, but to achieve change it has to bring together, politicians, planners, and residents (Sandercock, 2004). Citizen’s opinions and rights should be taken into consideration. It is the number one rule in the planning process for participants. It says, “recognize the rights of citizens to participate in planning decisions” (Ethical, n.d.). Cities cannot progress unless they change their ways of doing things.
Situation: As a patrol officer, I am only doing my job when I stop a car for running a red light. Unfortunately, the driver of the car happens to be the mayor. I give her a ticket anyway, but the next morning I get a call into the captain’s office and told in no uncertain terms that I screwed up, for there is an informal policy extending “Courtesy” to city politicians. Several nights later, I observe the mayor’s car weaving erratically across lanes and speeding. What would you do?
With just the simple crumbly and overgrown sidewalks to no one in a police car, these can really change people’s outlooks on
”(Twelvetrees, 2001) It takes special skills to work within communities especially if the community is not very open to suggestions and the issue to be addressed is sensitive. To be effective in community work, it takes a collaborative effort and partnership to bring about changes and advance the community. When working with communities, the planned change model as developed by Kirst-Ashman & Hull (2009) is a tool that can be utilized.
It seemed to work smoothly and efficiently but it was a bit confusing for me as I have never attended a city council meeting before. It was difficult to keep up with what they were saying and the topics they were going over since I had no previous knowledge of them. Thankfully the meeting was recorded so I could go over it a few times and figure out what they were saying. I recognize the difference now to if you are in the the meeting versus being an observer. I feel like it isn’t very easier for an outsider to state their thoughts if they are uninformed, or misinformed, of what’s going on.
Also, he needs to defend peoples’ rights like he mentions a story about an innocent man who got shot by the police and no one punished this officer. Instead, he is getting a raise every year. Harmond believes that No one is above the law and if he became a mayor, even the police misconduct will never be rewarded and all the people will follow the
Today in America we have a crime problem that has been around for generations. Governments in each states spends an enormous amount of money for prisons, police salaries, courthouse and etc. just to try to keep up with the growing amount of law offenders that we have today. Whether we, the citizens like it or not we are exposed with violent behavior from the movies we watch to the music we listen to. Watching the evening news and the top headline news is about the “Orlando Shooting” suspect kills 49 (CNN.com) you are already exposed to violence.
Civic and Conference Centre—Promise, information, meetings, participation rights. Every city has aspirations and concerns beyond its own borders. For example, when city elects their local officials, The voters not just looking for day-to-day task “managers” — they’re entrusting leaders with their city’s future.
