Oskar Schindler is most notably known for the safe haven he created for Jewish prisoners during the Holocaust, which saved upwards of 1,000 people. Schindler was born in Svitavy, Moravia on April 28, 1908 to a German Catholic family. He had one sister with whom he attended school with, but ultimately wasn’t successful there. In hopes of being successful like his father, he opted out of college and attended trade schools. After attending such schools and learning different, new skills, he worked diligently under his father at his farm machinery company. Unsure of what he wanted to do in life, he took various jobs to try and find his calling in life. Schindler was known for his outgoing personality, that included drinking and philandering, even though he was married. When Hitler rose to power in the early 1930s, Schindler saw his chance to profit and decided to capitalize on it. He left his wife and travelled to Krakow after the German invaded Poland, looking for business opportunities. Opportunities soon came when he became involved with the black market. He illegally bought different items off the market and used them, along with his outgoing personality and charm, to bribe high ranking German officers. This ended up working out for him and then was able to obtain a former Jewish enamelware factory to produce goods for the German military. This factory augmented his business immensely.
