Direct Quote #1- “Of Mice and Men” explains, “‘Why ain’t you wanted?’ Lennie asked. ‘Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black. They say I stink. Well, I tell you, you all of you stink to me’” (Steinbeck 68). EXPLANATION: Crooks himself mentioned that people are rude to him because he is back. He isn’t allowed to even play cards or do anything fun because of them. His bosses don’t take good care of him either.
