Expressive Writing as a Helping Mechanism in Overcoming Trauma For the class project I will research the topic of expressive writing in relation to overcoming traumatic experiences. Based on my own experiences I am very interested in expressive writing as a strategy in dealing with and processing traumatic events. Expressive writing is a form of writing in which individuals put their deepest thoughts, emotions, and feelings into words. This can happen in the form of journaling, letter writing, poetry writing, or in any other way that a person chooses to express him or herself. I think I will do a literature review for this project, in order to be able to find out more about this strategy from multiple angles. This topic is very important in that it can be used as a strategy in psychotherapy. Many individuals in this world have experienced some type of trauma during their lives. It is oftentimes very hard to deal with traumatic events but there are certain strategies that can really help to overcome such experiences. Writing in particular can help individuals in that it can be “used as a tool for conducting exposure and facilitating the processing of traumatic memories” (Cummings et al., 2014, p. 1). …show more content…
During my preliminary research about this topic there was a certain name that kept appearing throughout different research articles; J. W. Pennebaker seems to be the leader in the field who invented the technique of expressive writing. Many other researchers have built upon and validated his findings. Cummings et al. (2014) explain that, “Research has consistently documented a positive association between writing about emotional/stressful experiences (e.g., Pennebaker, 1997a) and both physical and mental health” (p.2). Therefore I am eager to find out more about Pennebaker’s original study and technique as well as other research in connection to this
There is an article called “How to Write a Memoir” by William Zinsser that contains three main pieces of advice, think small, be yourself, and speak freely. I read a book called “Guts” by Gary Paulsen that follows two of these pieces of advice. In chapter two of “Guts” Gary follows Zinsser’s advice on writing as you speak. He talks about the time when the carburetor in the Cessna he was in froze over. The pilot landed the plane on a frozen river covered with snow, as the plane was equipped with wheels and skis.
As a student myself, I understand the dislike for writing and the idea that it's not as useful as other things. This piece shows students that writing is so much more than that, but you can only see this if you understand the purpose and
In the essay “The Art of Surgery” by Richard Selzer, explains the value of writing and how it may allow us to form a realization within the meanings of pain, love, redemption, loss, and happiness. The power of writing allows one to escape their surrounding reality, and engage in a whole new world to express their own ideas, emotions, and thoughts. The reasons to why we may write can be various for any individual. I believe that writing can have both positive and negative consequences, to allow us to see why we may choose to write. Some of the positive outlooks of writing may include; understanding more about oneself, moving on from past situations, and learning more about the environment that surrounds us.
Linda Laidlaw and Suzanna So-har Wong wrote an article which addressed the difficulties found on the personal writing assignments. By using interviews and focus-groups date, Linda and Suzanna got to the conclusion that such assignments are challenging for students that come from diverse cultural background, families or life history. Many elementary teachers ask their students to share information about themselves or their lives. By using personal narrative, teachers assign her/his students to do projects such as “write about yourself”, “All about me”, “When I was born”, etc, which have created a problem for those parents and students that do not share the same cultural background or family’s composition.
There is so much external stimuli. Many people have not developed the skills to calm themselves and read. Many would rather watch the film or television version of a story—so much is missed because they won’t spend the time. What is the key to writing memoir?
Allowing ourselves to remember our experiences and confirm those memories though our writing can help others that have experienced something similar relate and connect to our writing. Victor Villanueva provides a very good example of how adding our memory of experiences into writing can be beneficial in his article, “Memoria is a friend of ours: On the Discourse of Color” Villanueva draws from his own personal experience throughout his whole article, and claims “The connections between narratives by people of color and the need to reclaim a memory, memory of an identity in formation and constant reformation, the need to reclaim a memory of an identity as formed through the generations…Memory simply cannot be adequately portrayed in the convectional
As I was reading Melissa Duffy’s “Inspiration, and Craig Vetter’s “Bonehead Writing,” I found myself connecting with Vetter’s paper more than Duffy’s. I found that the presentation in “Bonehead Writing” to capture my attention, and that Vetter’s feelings about writing was similar to my opinion on writing. Through his wording and humor, I think Craig Vetter wrote the best essay. I find that the wording and presentation of an article or essay influences my opinion of the writer, and it affects how I receive the idea they are trying to present to me. Craig Vetter uses a blunt approach to convey his idea that writing is nearly impossible to teach, and describes writing as “A blood sport, a walk in the garden of agony every time out.”
Diagnostic Many people have written the way Quindlen talks about in her essay, it does help some individuals with what they may be going through. I have written the same way and it has helped me get through tough times. The experience was hard to get through because sometimes people want what may be happening to end and not relive it. Although, writing can help anyone escape from their problems and get their problems out.
Having read the two articles provided and a choice of my own; gave me more understanding of the ways writers write personal narratives. Reading the short article, A Bad Why College Essay about the reasons behind students writing personal narratives and how they are incorrect. There is an example of how you

Kaye Gibbons once remarked that “someone once told me...writing is an act of faith. Another person told me that forgiving is also an act of faith. That’s true. I think both heal, both are arts. What a fine thing it is to do both at once” (Gibbons).
Now there are a quite few styles that writers write like poems, novel forms, or even in a jumbled format. Wilfred Owens wrote a poem, “Dulce et Decorum Est”, to express his near death experience. Owens organized poem, made it clear on what he was trying to get across. Another form that writers show their protest in structure is in a novel format. Tim O’ Brien used a more laid back structure in “The Things They Carried” telling the audience what items were being used to survive in the war, but also turned a negative to a positive, due to the fact what they had to carry saved their lives.
I know when I something big has happened to me, I like to write. A person may write to express them self and use writing as a way to lift weight of their shoulders and relieve stress and feelings. Sometimes people share theirs stories solely because they think people need to know. People need to know what happened. People need to understand what others are capable of when in power and how people aren’t going to care if they don’t pertain to their life no matter who they are.
Writing in My Own Perspective My experience with writing is not that great. When I was a child in elementary school, my teacher asked us to write many essays in Arabic. I remember that when I went back home, I started to tell my mother about the assignment and that I did not want to write it. My mother began to search for information related to the topic. She always loved to help me with my essays.
Writing is extremely comforting to me, I even find it therapeutic. As a young writer, I would write short stories on silly ideas like puppies or flowers because I enjoyed that. As I progressed through middle school, I picked up different styles of writing by reading books from various authors. The more styles of writing that I read, the more I wrote. I used to write about fictional characters and subjects.
