I learned about Occidental from my family, my cousin Brian Smith is the offensive coordinator for Oxy's football team and his wife Liane Smith works for Oxy as well. When I visited Oxy I was able to experience the school for what it really is, an amazing community. Everyone I talked to, students and staff, were very friendly and made me feel right at home. I was able to attend the homecoming barbecue and football game and it really left me with a great feeling about the school. My main interest in Occidental is that it is a liberal arts school. The first year seminars interests me the most because I would be able to take a class on something I was never able to in high school, out of the current courses offered I am most interested in Racial
I’m gonna talk about the book “Night” that we have read in class during the second term. The story has for setting the time period of the WWII, in Europe. The story is about Elie, a jew and his family that are facing a lot of struggles because of their religion. Over the course of the book, Elie changes from believing in God to not believe in God. This is important to the book as a whole because it connects to the internal conflict.
Before reading “Nickel and Dimed: On (NOT) Getting by in America”, my perception of blue collar Americans is much different. I had figured that blue collared workers in lower paying jobs were not very hard working people, and that they still made enough money to have decent living conditions. Before reading Nickel and Dimed I thought that if you had a job and were not making enough to get by that you were probably a lazy person. Reading Nickel and Dimed really opened my eyes to the quality of life workers in these jobs have made me realize that you can be employed at a Walmart or as a hotel maid like Barbara Ehrenreich was and still be living in poverty. I learned pretty early into Nickel and Dimed that only having one job at this level of jobs
Unique courses like HLSC208 will enable me to explore my interests, and develop new passions that I can further explore.
When I joined AVID in seventh grade I was amazed how AVID works and how it can be used every day. Not only AVID helps you with your grades, but it also helps you to be more organized and a hard-working student. AVID helped me discover my full potential by showing me that I can always do better. What I mean by this is that in sixth grade I was not in AVID, I made all A’s and B’s. In seventh grade when I was in AVID, I made all A’s.
There are many things I learned in my interview with Rosemary Plorin. I learned what skills are invaluable in the public relations field. What seemed to be most impressive about Plorin is growth from her humble beginnings. She did not go to college bright-eyed and ready to become the healthcare PR powerhouse she is today. She underwent a gradual change that required introspective reflection.
Although Salt to the Sea is a story about things that have been lost and people enduring extreme hardships, it is also a story about hope, family, and love. In the novel Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, a band of refugees find unlikely friends and family within a group they formed to help each other get through the horrors of the war taking place in 1945 in Germany. The characters board a ship to bring them to safety in western Germany, however it tragically sinks and only 1/10 survive. The love and bonds that were created amongst strangers eventually gave them will and hope to carry on and to survive.
As I reflect on the MSW program at Sacramento State University, I am grateful for the experiences I was able to receive during my field work during both years in my MSW program. I am grateful for choosing a program that includes internship as part of the requirement. I truly believe that the field work we have been provided with has given us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and learn what being a social worker really means. The most challenging thing for me during the MSW program was starting my second year placement. It was my first time working in a medical environment and I did not know what to expect.
I’ve made friends, learned amazing things, and have the privilege of working with some of the most amazing instructors that exist anywhere. WCC isn’t just a community college to me. It was the place where I truly found who I wanted to be. WCC gave me the tools to succeed as a first-generation college student. By going here, it has lit a fire of passion in me to continue and get a degree in Chemistry.
I am looking forward to learn more about the perspectives and everything else the class has to offer. It’s definitely early in the semester and I am sure I will have a lot more to reflect on in the
I found the excerpt from the book, The Life of Olaudah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa the African had left a significant impact on me after I had finished reading the entirety of chapter two. The chapter began with Equiano describing his childhood. One aspect of his childhood that had great significance on his life was the short anecdote about how when he and the other children in the area would go out to play, but they would also climb up in the trees to be lookouts for potential kidnappers so they could warn the others to attack. After he told that story, he told the one about the day his people were not there to help secure his safety so he and his sister, who were all alone, were kidnapped. That was the day that his life was changed forever.
I am very thankful for the opportunity to intern at the Waterfront Public School and having the chance to work with two very different students with DD. This experience gave me a better understanding of how the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) employs DSWs and how they value our role within their classrooms. I was fortunate enough to work with a collaborative team of staff that encouraged my professional growth by allowing me to assess and implement new teaching strategies. This team also provided me with much needed feedback and criticism along the way, which I valued and learned from. In addition, this education support placement allowed me to fulfill many performance elements related to learning outcome seven of the DSW Program Manual.
Being Latino, this course has brought up some points that I have related to their values has changed the ways I think about things and believe that everyone deserves a chance and that our race shouldn’t define us. It is hard that we live in a conservative city that has isolated us in this bubble. Keep them striving and break this stereotype that everyone puts them into. This brought an eye opening of my awareness toward racism. The difficulty that they have to go overcome based on their race.
Frankenstein Written by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein features a creation gone awry in a classic, poetic piece of literature. Shelley paints a dark, sinister book which hopes to expose humanity as bleak and exclusive. Starting off, a man named Robert Walton sends his sister Margaret several letters detailing his adventure as the captain of a ship sailing towards the North Pole. Walton notes that he met a man by the name of Victor Frankenstein, whom he found stranded after attempting to catch another sledge pulled by dogs on a stretch of ice. Once the crew of the ship rescues Frankenstein, he details his life over the past (time interval) to Walton as he recovers from ailments only partially suffered from his encounter with the frigid weather.
ATSU is a school like none other. The facility is extremely approachable and make you feel welcome. They truly want you to succeed and will take your time to answer any questions. Not only that, the students are amazing. There is a family environment: upperclassmen are always willing to listen and help you out as well as your own classmates.
I’ve never been very interested in fashion and I’m not a fan of constantly updating my wardrobe. Seeing the major effects that the fashion industry has makes me feel better about falling behind in the fashion world. I watched China Blue, a documentary about the poor working conditions in Chinese factories that produced denim products, for my International Management course as an undergraduate student. That documentary impacted me, and I often think of the people that were highlighted in that film. I feel as if The True Cost will be a documentary that I think of from time to time as well.
