The security situation in Afghanistan with increased attacks by Talibans and a Daesh footprint remains worrisome for the overall peace and security in the region. The coming of BJP in power in India has certainly created new challenges in normalization of relations. However, our message has always been clear and consistent that we want cooperation not confrontation. At home, it is indeed unfortunate that we have not been able to translate the vision of our forefathers to make Pakistan a place where people could live in a secure environment, where their lives and belongings are protected, where they have equal opportunities to education, health and jobs. We have unfortunately failed to invest in our people and thus we see the multiple challenges being confronted by the nation today. The continued political stability and democratic process deriving legitimacy from a consensus constitution is contributing to our strength and international standing. We have abounding natural resources and vast arable land which needs to be tapped and managed effectively. Building sustainable communities that are inclusive, secure and sensitive to needs of the citizens will continue to be of national priority. However, over the years, crime has stymied this endeavour. There must be a commitment to ensuring safety, security and justice for all citizens, which are seen as moral rights and intrinsic to development. Good policing, targeted social interventions and an efficient judicial system are needed to help our nation thrive.
