1. Introduction
The research paper will discuss the effect of piracy and illegal downloading of movies on the film industry of Pakistan along with examining its effect on revenue, challenges faced by the film artists and its effect on weakening of copyright bill. Furthermore the research aims to examine the factors provoking audience to carry out illegal movie downloading.
The entertainment industry known as show biz includes music, cinema, dramas, radio, theater and television. From 1896 to 1947 Pakistan shared its film industry history with India. During this period large number of Pakistani artist debuted and many films were produced in Lahore. ‘The Daughter of today’ released in 1924 was the first silent film from Lahore. In 1932 ‘Heer Ranjha’ released it was the first ever film made in Lahore. The man who started film making in Lahore was Mian Abdur Rasheed. The whole style of film music from Bengali to Punjabi folk changed by Director Master Ghulam Haidar. From 1956 to 1966 is considered to be Golden Era of Pakistani film industry. The dark phase began from 1970 when quality films were not produced, there came a time when the Pakistani film industry couldn’t survive anymore (Mpaop, 2014). The Pakistani film artists suffered a lot in the General Zia-ul-Haq’s era of conservative dictatorship. At the present, with the rapid technological advancement in the digital era identical movies copies are freely shared and distributed over the internet. ‘Napster’ (1999), Peer-to Peer file sharing program was the first software that made copyrighted material for free and was easily available, unit shut down in 2001. During 2000 the increase in the internet and advancement in the encoding video techniques sharing and downloading movies became more flexible. Popular files were difficult to get with Peer-to Peer protocols. The Bit Torrent released in 2001, allowed users to download and upload file at the same time with faster downloading.
