The White Hotel, written by D.M. Thomas and published in 1981, is a post modern novel that does not read easily, with its graphic, frustrating and at times absurd story line, read through a fragmented structure. The novel, though it does not appear to do so in the beginning due to the nature of its explicit, and in some cases pornographic entries, becomes part of the Holocaust literature genre, detailing events specific to the atrocities that happened at Babi Yar, and retold from a version written by Anatoli Kuznetsov. This is where the controversy comes in to the novel, around the idea of placing such explicit scenes alongside such a serious and horrific part of history, and around the authenticity and plagiarism of this section in the novel.
MID-TERM PAPER Part 1: Resist (1967-1974) During the Asian American Movement, Asian American literature was more of a tool for the movement. Writers during that time would write so that the movement can get start and kept going. This was also the time when the term Asian American was being defined (Yellow Power). The word resist is how I would describe Asian American Literature, since The Asian American Movement is a cause to resist the unjustly things that was done to Asian Americans.
Karen Yamashita is a testament to the idea that Asian America is a political movement, not a racial identifier. Yamashita’s novel, I-Hotel, tells the story of the Asian American community during the 1960s and 70s in California by weaving one story throughout ten seemingly separate novellas, with each one representing a room in a hotel. In I-Hotel, Yamashita champions magical realism, a literary style when otherworldly events are written as fact. By writing I-Hotel in this style, Yamashita provides the reader with a firmer understanding of real-life events these magical depictions often mirror. In her genre-defying fictional novel, I-Hotel, scholar and professor Karen Tei Yamashita warps illusion and reality in most of her ten novellas.
