People often describe things they like as being good, but what exactly is it that makes something good? “The Kite Runner” is a novel acclaimed by many critics and readers of being a “good novel”. It is about the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father’s servant. It is a story involving many troubling circumstances that many people would not like to go through themselves, (rape, war, etc) so why is it that this novel is held near and dear to so many readers’ hearts? The answer to that question is simple, a good novel must be relatable, must be able to get the reader to sympathize and care for the characters, and must be able to make the reader feel emotion. Just like many countries during the time period and even now, Afghanistan – the setting of the novel – was plagued by war and hardship. There were scenes containing rape, murder, and slavery, all things that happen too often in life. So in the eyes of one who has gone through these tough circumstances this book is something that knows of all the horrible things that can happen in life. It offers a means of relief to know that just like Amir and Sohrab, there can be redemption and a chance to have a better life. Because of this strong relatability, the novel is loved
