Research Paradigms and Designs
There are three major research paradigms and various designs that fall within each paradigm. The three major research paradigms are: quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods.
First let’s look at the quantitative paradigms many components. When explaining the quantitative paradigm it is important to note that data is numerical, objective, and follows the framework of scientific realism (Lodico, et al., 2006). “Scientific realist further assume that the social and psychological world can be studied in the same way as the natural world by breaking complex phenomena and problems into small parts (constructs and variables)” (Lodico, et al., 2006). Quantitative research deals with cause-and-effect

Single-subject design is a form of experimental research that does not involve random assignment (Lodico, et al., 2006). Under the single-subject experimental design the researcher can assemble a small selection of participants, who will be both the control and treatment group (Lodico, et al., 2006). The research question stated previously can be conducted as a single-subject experimental design. The kindergarteners of one classroom, who receive typical sight word instruction for months, will have a collection of the formerly recorded data. This compilation of data will be reviewed to determine whether or not the students have successfully reached the sight word benchmark. The kindergarten students below standard will act as both the control and treatment group and the initial data gathered on those students will represent the baseline periods (Lodico, et al., 2006). Then the small group of participants, will go through intervention of the treatment (multi-sensory learning techniques), while measures of data collection for the treatment period continue. After that, remove the treatment and reassess baseline results another time. This particular method of collecting data is called the A-B-A design (Lodico, et al., 2006). In this case, data collection includes: observations, pre- and post-testing, observational checklists, and …show more content…
The action research design lands in the mixed-methods category and is used for educational research purposes. Action research creates an opportunity for educators to look at current practices and make the necessary adjustments promptly in their specific teaching environments (Lodico, et al., 2006). The basic steps of action research entail: selecting a problem or topic to improve upon, collect and analyze data, devise a action plan, implement action plan, reassess after implementation, evaluate the totality of data, and make conclusions (Lodico, et al., 2006). Using the previously mentioned research question, a researcher can create a small intervention group of kindergarteners who have shown through pre-testing that they have difficulty retaining sight words. The intervention teacher will use multi-sensory learning activities involving the sight word list to increase retention rates. Data collection methods are pre and post testing, observation of reading, and student
The collection that I have so far is; students wide screeners which seek to identify students who may be struggling, individual assessments which attempt to track development, such as a spelling inventory, pretests which assess how much student’s know before beginning a unit, formative assessments
Will you be using a between-subjects or within-subjects design? If you have more than one IV, you need to answer this question separately for each IV. I will be using within subjects design. The participants will be given the same treatment during the experiment.
The author explains that multiple means of data collection must be used to identify students. Additionally, assessments tools used by educators must be reliable and valid. Furthermore, educators need to frequently gather data on students who are considered at risk several times per year in the areas of reading and math. The author further explains that a team of educators should identify evidence-based instructional strategies the general education teacher should apply before making a special education referral for services.
The test should be on level how you gone know if a student learning if the test below
Practitioner research question: Can I improve communication skills, engagement and participation for pupils who have Autism by implementing the key principles of Attention Autism programme across the curriculum in a Key stage 1 classroom? The purpose of this practitioner research study is to explore how I could improve the pupil’s communication skills by embedding the key principles Attention Autism programme and strategies in my teaching of the curriculum to my class which is a Key stage 1 class with children with who have an ASD. The research was carried out within the school day in a classroom, which is part of a school for children with ASD and for children who have a learning disability.
Give details so I know you understand the type of research design. a. The research design that seems best fit would be an experimental
Figure 1 is a summary of the students’ learning throughout the learning segment. I administrated this test as a pre-assessment prior to the lesson one and administered it again after the completion of lesson 3. This test is a compilation of students’ learning and it demonstration how they met the standards and objectives that were set out for them to achieve. The evaluation criteria in which this assessment and all other assessment in the individual lessons did was not altered. Even though the students have different learning needs, the assessment met all of the needs for all learners.
Teachers can compare data between separate schools or different, but similar students, to try
Ray’s Theory We love our “Hero’s.” In Robert B. Ray’s essay, The Thematic Paradigm, he explains that Americans have always been undecided about the value of civilization. Whether in real life or fictional, there is a contrast in the “Hero” type. First being the “Official Hero,” one who is responsible, usually having a family, job and one who believes “you can’t take the law into your own hands.”
a. To conduct a running record: Adrian will need to select a passage that is around one hundred to two hundred words long. He should allow the student to read the passage a few times before conduction the assessment. He should either be able to see the passage or have his own copies, and then as the child reads, he needs to keep a record of the words the student reads correctly and the errors that the student makes. b. Information: The first thing Adrian will be to decide is if based on the accuracy, if the passage was appropriate for this student. This will tell if the text is independent,
Nursing research is a systematic review designed for develop knowledge about concerns related to nurses which containing nursing education, nursing practice, and nursing administration (Polit & Beck, 2006). Based on Tingen et al (2009), nurses able to deliver a good quality care for patient by applying evidence based practice through research. Besides, nurses have to be knowledgeable in research and evidence based practice to provide the best outcome for the patients. In addition to nursing research aimed for influencing the immediate arrangement of nursing and health care to beneficiaries of nursing care, nursing research likewise is expected to create learning in regions that influence nursing care forms by implication.
The replacement behavior is acceptable both in school and socially. C. Describe a data collection tool that you would use to document the student’s progress using the replacement behavior in
Another important piece of data that I should use to create my lesson are Lexile scores. Lexile scores are important for every content area because reading is a part of every subject. Test scores on all tests that the student has completed through his or her school career are important as well. It is important to see if a student
This literature review will be covering the topic on research paradigms. There are three major paradigms in the research paradigms which are the positivist paradigm research, interpretivist paradigm research and critical paradigm research. Each research paradigm has its own strengths and effectiveness due to their unique features which are specific to their particular approach as well as weaknesses. All researchers have their own beliefs and methods while conducting a research. Therefore, the ways of research studies conducted are vary.
The term Research Methodology refers to a set of procedures, methods & techniques that are put together by the researchers to obtain a solution to the problems they confront during the collection of data. The researchers look for the most crucial data which is inevitable for the research. Generally there are three kinds of approaches or research methods namely Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed. These methods are used to gather data and resolve issues that emerge during the process of data gathering. The researcher can bring forward his findings either in the form of quantitative or qualitative or mixed research methodologies only when the data is collected based on the preliminary data gathering process and the secondary data gathering process.
