The journal article “ Don’t Aim Too High for Your Kids: Parental Overaspiration Undermines Students’ Learning in Mathematics” was written by Kou Murayama, Reinheard Pekrun, Masayuki Suzuki, and Herbert W. Marsh. Nowadays, parents have high expectation and aspiration on their children as they hope that the children can perform well in school. This article aimed to investigate the effect of the aspiration of parents on their children’s academic achievement. Throughout this article, the main argument stated by the authors was that high parental aspiration resulted in negative reciprocal effect in children’s academic achievement. The authors provided useful premises which seemed to be convincing to the readers. They stated that unrealistic expectation and overaspiration of parents on their children will be detrimental for children’s academic achievement, in view of the fact that parents show immoderate parental control and involvement result in negative impact of children’s emotion such as anxiety and frustration. Hence, parents who simply raised the aspiration towards their children’s academic achievement cannot be an effective way to improve children’s engagement in their academic fields. In addition, the authors also did a great job by showing precision on important terms and words, which helped in their consistency in argument. They gave clear definition of “parental expectation” and “parental aspiration” in the article. It is very important for the readers to distinguish between the two terms as it is the key to understand the purpose and conclusion of the article. Also, the authors also presented reliable result from the research which is one of the strong evidence in this article. From the result, it showed that parental aspiration caused an increase percentage of Mathematics achievement in children, but parental overaspiration caused slight decrease over time in children’s Mathematics results. The authors used this as a strong evidence to support their argument, which is the overaspiration of parents lead …show more content…
They collected a large-scale of sample of parents and children from Germany in the research. After that, they analyzed the data by applying the advanced quantitative methodology, which is the bi-variate dual-change score model. Factors such as age, gender, school type, intelligence, and family socioeconomic status (SES) and others were taking into consideration while analyzing the data. It is a good practice for repeating the experiment on the families in United States as it increased the robustness of the results. Additionally, the authors conducted robustness check by doing traditional cross-lagged model to prove that their results did not depend on particular model. Hence, the the result was mostly reliable as they started with an appropriate method to conduct the research and detail analysis of the
As a result of searching the existing literature, the researcher was able to obtain data that correlated exceptionally well with the research topic. Indeed, the researcher gathered pertinent information from secondary sources; however, the primary sources of data were needed to draw a logical conclusion of the research at hand. So, the next step was major section III, Research Methodology. Being
The authors also use statistics which shows they have done their research. This allows the audience to believe this article is a reliable
This refers to those parents who overschedule their kids with AP courses and other resources to prepare the students for exams and assignments according to Bruni (Bruni,2 ). Even though, Bruni disagrees with the concept of helicopter parents in which he states that “There’s a unifying theme: Enough is enough”. Yet, I comply with the concept of helicopter parents because I believe students can achieve positive results such as higher GPAs and test scores, but that work does lead to kids being exhausted and overstressed from being overworked. Moreover, Parents fill up their kids schedule with extra curricular activities which may sound exhausting yet, it has positive outcomes. To exemplify, the previous statement physical well-being, higher self-esteem and also higher high school graduation rates are some of those results according to Pondiscio (Pondiscio,2).
This leads the authors to perform a study with the attempt of
Being in front of this challenge students try to work harder in order to succeed. In the article, Sherry uses pieces of evidence from her personal experience and examples to support her thesis. Also, her article is well-organized, and Sherry uses an academic language. However, Sherry do not consider many aspects that might affect students. She gives to much importance the example that she gives with her son.
Parental contribution in school can take care of this issue by accentuating the significance of a decent training, and getting their kids amped up for learning. " [F]or most youngsters to prevail in school, their folks' enthusiasm for their learning is of vital significance. In any case, this intrigue should be with what happens once a day, since this is the way the youngster lives, and this is the manner by which he comprehends his life. The key fixing in most kids' achievement in school is a positive connection to his folks." (Bettelheim
Because of this students will do try for good grades in order to satisfy their parents instead of doing it for themselves to be more
Proper sample size was used and the trial duration was long enough to capture the characteristics of
Background Lamar Consolidated Independent School District mission statement is to ensure that all students have access to a superior education. Leadership is an essential part of inspiring, motivating students to achieve their full potential to participate in future opportunities in their community. Lamar CISD community involvement is one of the keys to success for students and families. Income has been a huge obstacle that has been preventing key strategies for closing the achievement gaps. The family is well educated which provides better education to the children (Guryan, Hurst & Kearney, 2008). Both parents style of parenting is very authoritative as both parents, especially Mrs. Yau displays a high degree of nurturance In the family, both parents are noted to be in high SES as they both are well respected doctors and have a respectable background in the family history. Studies showed that high SES families can afford their children services, toys and goods, family outings and social connections which could benefit to the child, whereas low SES families could have lack of access to similar resources (Bradley and Crowyn, 2002). A study by DeGarmo and colleagues (1999) also found that income, education and occupation were associated with better parenting, which positively affected school achievement with skill-building activities and behavior in school. This can explain how Alexander has good behavior in class.

The literature review gives justified information for the need of conducting the research. Apart from the introduction, there is no other information concerning the research title that could offer detailed information (Chaliha et a., 2001). Despite giving the justified information in the introduction section the paper should have had the literature review section, thus it did not follow the due steps and format of a research paper. The methodology part follows after the introduction and it discloses the methods used, the design, the people included in the study and how the data was sampled and examined. However, the reasons for choosing the design in the research were not
Parents always play the significant role toward their children to teach them since they were born. They basically mold and shape their children into adults through their world of influence (Baumrind, 1971). Parents’ behavior is essential especially during the period of adolescent due to an increase of youth risky performance. Nevertheless, teaching is like a double-edged sword.
If a child grew up surrounded by a positive and encouraging home-life, it can be seen in their better test scores than children grew up in a negative environment. And of course a person’s access to school and educational materials while affect someone’s long-term intelligence (Genetic and Environmental Impacts,
