Parental attitude and Aggression in adolescents
Introduction: Adolescent maturation is a personal phase of development where children have to establish their own beliefs, values, and what they want to accomplish out of life. Because adolescents constantly and realistically appraise themselves, they are often characterized as being extremely self-conscious. However, the self-evaluation process leads to the beginning of long-range goal setting, emotional and social independence, and the making of a mature adult. Conventional wisdom holds that adolescence is a period of 'storm and stress ', characterized by moodiness, inner turmoil and rebellion. One major question in psychology is about the reasons behind the problem of violence and

The random sampling technique was used for collecting data. Age of the subjects ranged between 19 to 21 years, the mean age being 20.5 years. All the students belonged to upper middle class socio-economic background.
Methods Used: Following questionnaires were used for measuring the central variables-
a) Parent-child relation questionnaire (PCRQ) - In order to assess the parental attitudes or child rearing style, parent-child relation questionnaire (PCRQ) developed by Singh (1984) was used. The PCRQ consists of two forms- the father form and the mother form. Each form has six subscales i.e. loving, dominating, rejecting, protecting, punishing and disciplining. Out of these six dimensions of parental attitudes, three dimensions or subscale are positive (i.e. loving, protecting and disciplining) and other three dimensions or subscale are negative .(i.e. dominating, rejecting and punishing).
b)Aggression Questionnaire- The Aggression Questionnaire (Buss, & Perry, 1992) was used for measuring adolescents aggressive behavior. It contains 29 self-report items assessing cognitive, affective, and behavioral components of this domain. Subscales include Hostility (i.e., hostile cognition), Anger (i.e., hostile affect), Physical aggression, and Verbal

While negative parental attitude (both father and mother) play a crucial role in developing aggressive behavior among adolescents, as it was found in present study that negative parental attitude was positively correlated with aggression. Similarly, it is also that mother 's attitude are more important in experienced of aggression among adolescents as compared to fathers attitude. As it is clear from this study that mothers negative attitudes play significant role in developing aggressive behavior among
Human relationships do not guarantee ideal function, even if it is between a parent and their child. The presence of fear when opposition is presented, turns any situation relating respect
In 1939, the world was plunged into World War II. This happened as a result of Germany remilitarizing the Rhineland, violating the Treaty of Versailles in the process, leaders in Europe assuming power through intimidation and creating laws depriving citizens of basic civil rights, German expansion into other areas of Europe, an attempt to appease Germany through the Munich Agreement, and political and economic instability in the major European countries. This conflict brought up appeasement and collective security, both of which were used before the war in an attempt to prevent it, as responses to aggression. Of the two, collective security is the most effective response to aggression because it has a great chance of ensuring the maintenance
Young teens are very vulnerable and insecure, some figure out how to deal with this reasonably and others tend to stray. Teens who are involved in criminal violence are often misguided and just need help to get on the right path. For many though “We see them as wayward youths, as kids gone wrong”, but when in reality they “are nonetheless not ‘bad.’ This image is of the teen as a victim. They are misguided, immature, insufficiently socialized, but not evil.”
Since their childhoods it’s been taught to them, usually by their father figure, these children are molded into this violent image that only forces repressed emotions and violent outbreaks. Although they are only looking out for them in this world they’ve created, it is only setting them up for failure. It is important that we know the rules aren’t learned, human nature doesn’t turn them into killers, but rather the constant repetition and reminders of the rules throughout their lives, shaping their their
Aggression is one of the most common behaviors in the children. It takes a longer amount of time for this emotion to fade away, because a majority of the time they feel they are not understood, and they see everyone as an
Nature and Nurture Influence on Aggression One psychology debate that remains in today's world is the argument between nature and nurture. Scientists who study behaviors, like psychologists or sociologists, are always arguing about the topic of nature and nurture. Whether nature or nurture plays a more significant role in terms of forming us. Our personality is influenced by many factors in our life, such as the environment or the inherited genes. Some people believe that genes play a bigger part in the formation of our mental traits, such as personality.
.for the days they missed recovering from violent attacks and used this as justification to expel them from school” (Rios, 6). The negative interactions from these adult figures in control further adds to the youths’ sense of defeat and hopelessness. The prejudice these teens face makes it difficult for them to lead a better lifestyle, forcing them to turn back towards criminal antics because they are not accepted anywhere
He describes the adolescent years as a time when we are most immature during our thinking processes. Because of this, teenagers are more argumentative due to underdeveloped reasoning abilities. They believe they are invincible and take risks. (Psychosocial Development Theory) Erik Erikson’s theory of Psychosocial Development may also provide an interesting explanation for the prevalence of teenagers in gangs.
A range of behaviors which can lead to both physical and psychological harm to oneself, other, or objects in the environment is known as aggression. There are a number of ways to express aggression, such as physically, mentally and verbally. The basic assumption of aggression is that all behaviors represent an attempt to adapt to the environment and survival and mastery/control are served as the two basic needs that encourage successful adaptation. And humans are not innately aggressive will be discussed after going through what is aggression.
Vermeersch and colleagues (2008) found opposing results in a group of 14-15 year old Flemish adolescents. They did not find any gender differences between parental control and aggressive risk taking behavior. However, they did find that maternal direct control influenced non-aggressive risk taking behavior more for female adolescents than for male adolescents. Taking into consideration the previous studies, parental control should influence delinquency more for males than
It is assumed that a child will have seen their fair share of violence while young, but a loving parent’s touch will hopefully dull down any negative influence. But, during adolescence, the frequency of violence is easier to witness, and worse, commit. Antisocial and aggressive behaviors begin developing as early as preschool and elementary school. The coercion theory suggests that children who become juveniles happens when they are influenced by outer sources, like peer pressure and television.
Juveniles use violence for many different reasons such as to belong to a group, be able to adjust to their environment, get rewards that are unattainable through social norms, and to express internal anger (Khromina, 2007). With this being said, the conflict theory is compromised of four major factors. First, individuals are shaped by social conflict due to the occurring conflict of limited resources. The second factor is the reasoning behind the conflict. The third factor is the dominating groups in society that are caused by conflict over resources and the last factor are the unfair influence that the dominant groups have over society (Khromina, 2007).
Aggression is a spoken or physical behavior that causes intentional harm to a person. There are many different theories that argue what the cause of aggression is but this can be divided into two major types: people who think that aggression is inborn and those that view it as a learning behavior. The Social cognitive theory states that we learn behaviors through observation and modeling and this could be implied that we learn aggressive behaviors through observing and imitating others. The Social Cognitive theory claims that people learn behaviors from observation, modeling, and motivation such as positive reinforcement. Psychologists mention that people learn behaviors by imitating models through observational learning; as well as through
Anger is an emotion a person is inflicted with when he or she feels great displeasure, annoyance, and hostility from someone or something. If a person is deliberately wronged, he or she will become affected by anger. When a person becomes angry it is very natural, it’s a defense mechanism to protect one’s self from becoming more vulnerable to the attack. Protecting one’s family from danger or theft is expressed by anger. Also, anger can surface from the neglect of personal needs.
Esbensin, Peterson, Taylor and Freng (2010) implies that “ young people who have committed serious violent offenses have the highest level of impulsive and risk-seeking tendencies.” Moreover, extreme violent criminal activity being performed in front of youth increases the risk of them performing acts of extreme violence themselves. Because youth see those acts as acceptable so committng those violent activities make youths to become ruthless. Smith and Green (2007) assert that violent activities becoming ruthless and the perpetrators even more ruthless.
