Parmigiano-Reggiano: An analysis on Parmigiano-Reggiano and Parmesan Cheese
Parmigiano-Reggiano is one of the Made in Italy gastronomy symbols. Parmigiano-Reggiano is a hard parmesan cheese made in Italy. For centuries, this type of cheese has become one of Italy delicacy and part of Italy identity. Through my research, I am going to analyze in depth what is the difference between Parmigiano-Reggiano and Parmesan cheese and discuss the history and process of the cheeses.

Parmesan cheese is known Parmigiano-Reggiano a cheese made in and around the Italian province of Parma for the last eight hundred years. However, parmesan cheese making process it similar but the ingredients slightly different. So, what exactly is parmesan cheese? Parmesan cheese is also a hard, dry cheese made from partially skimmed or skimmed milk. Also, this cheese is a hard to light golden outer layer with a sharp, rich flavor and they differentiate in the granular texture and consistency. Parmesan cheese produced in the United States, Australia, and Argentina. Also, most U.S. versions are usually aged at least ten months and Parmigiano-Reggiano are aged at least two years. Cheeses labeled stravecchio have been aged for three years, while stravecchiones are aged three or more years old. Parmesan cheese has a complex flavor, and extremely granular texture are a result of the long-time aging. Parmesan cheese has a become the go-to cheese for every household in the United States and many other countries as well. In Michael Pollan’s essay “Escape from the Western Diet,” he directly to Americans about the western diet and why he believes they need to escape from it. The reason Americans should escape the western diet is to avoid the harmful effects associated with it such as “western diseases” (Pollan, 420). To support his view on the issue, Pollan describes factors of the western diet that dictate what Americans believe they should eat. These factors include scientists with their theories of nutritionist, the food industry supporting the theories by making products, and the health industry making medication to support those same theories. Overall, Pollan feels that in order to escape this diet, people need to get the idea of it out of their heads.

Barthes’s essay of “Steak Frites” in mid-20th century France, showcases the French ideals and mythology of consuming steak in its more rare and bloody form of, saignant. Barthes explains the ideals explaining: eating steak fills the consumer with the strength of said animal. The French believe that meat should be eaten in terms of the blood content [saignant] and a good steak is eaten more rare in order to be closer in touch to the animal providing a more exceptional meal. In France a common belief is, “steak is endowed a supplementary virtue of elegance” ( Barthes 84).Meaning a meal of more importance and luxury, as the French see it as a more prestigious food.
¬¬As Michelangelo’s David is made in years 1501-04, and is detailed from the penetrating veins, furrowed brows and the muscles, we can know that this sculpture was made during the High Renaissance, as in this period it is known to be during fifteen hundreds, and that in this period they make their art more detailed than in ancient Greek and Rome to make it look more realistic. On the other hand as Bernini’s David is made during 1623-24, extra details in both face and drapery, and the movement depicted, we can know that this sculpture was made during baroque art period, as in this period they used exaggerated motion and details to produce drama, tension, and grandeur in art, and is known to be during sixteen hundreds. In conclusion, as Bernini’s David is made during the Baroque period, where it used to be more detailed and highlights motion, as we noticed in the sculpture; unlike Michelangelo’s David which is made during the renaissance period, where it used to be detailed but not much and didn’t depict movements. From those differences that are between both sculptures and there periods we can determine that Bernini’s David is more expressive than Michelangelo’s
