As Cathy Seeley explains in the article, Faster Isn’t Smarter: The Trap of Timed Tests, “Some students are good at timed tests and some are not. Students are also was prevented from finishing the test, something that causes some them a tremendous amount of stress.” Furthermore, the teacher was led to falsely believe that the student did not know the topic well. When students are put under tremendous amounts of stress, they often underperform because of the presence of anxiety. Indeed some of the students who completed the test and did well were those who indicated the most severe anxiety, talking about being “scared” when they were asked to take the test. The following were responses from fourth and second graders: “Complete this sentence, This test made me feel…” ‘Worried that I won’t finish.’ ‘It just scares me that I might get a bad score.’ ‘Nervous because I am afraid I will not finish or make a mistake.’ As you can see by this study done at Stanford University, students are more focused on the time constraint rather than performing well on the test.
Students are spending increasing amounts of time preparing for and taking competitive standardized tests. Standardized testing has become a controversial discussion subject, as it does not improve student achievement or teacher performance. Some advocate for these tests because it provides students, parents, and the government with information on the students’ progress. Although most schools make students take standardized tests, it does not measure the knowledge of the students, causes disadvantages for students and teachers, and can be biased or even unfair. First, high-status universities decided they wanted to offer more students across the country a better chance in higher education, but there was not a way to measure the proficiency
They are inaccurate in evaluating a student’s performance and intelligence. The test ignores other talents a student possesses, and just focuses on reading, math, and writing. It takes out the creativity and forces students to think inside the box. Every student is different and special in their own way; when a whole nation of students’ have to take the same exact test, results are going to be skewed and biased, because everyone isn’t taught the same nor think the same. Education across America is unequal; there are students who have the resources, opportunities, and teachers by their side to succeed.
Standardized Tests: More Harm Than Good? The question of whether standardized tests are doing more good than harm has been becoming more and more of a controversial topic. This is especially important because it is a high school graduation requirement to pass these types of tests. Students shouldn 't have to pass a statewide standardized test before graduating because some students may be bad test takers, students may not be able to afford tutoring, and may struggle with connecting what they learn in class to the real world. Standardized tests aren 't an accurate way to test a child 's knowledge because the student could be having a bad day which would affect their score.
I think standardized tests should be changed because standardized tests are unreliable, children and teachers spend a lot of time preparing for it, and standardized tests are causing stress in students and teachers. Firstly, tests are unreliable. “A 2001 study published by the Brookings Institution found that 50-80% of year-over-year test score improvements were temporary and "caused by fluctuations that had nothing to do with long-term changes in learning..." This shows that the information collected from the test can not really provide accurate information for teachers because of the inconsistent data. The data cannot show what students need to learn because of the fluctuations, making the standardized tests inaccurate and unreliable. This will only ruin the recent grades because the teachers do not know what to teach the students.
Additionally, the lack of seriousness transitions into students being uninterested in school because they have to take unnecessarily long tests. Not only do standardized tests cause lack of school interest but they increase students stress. Having to sit through a test that impacts your grade, represents your intelligence, and future adds a lot of pressure to oneself. Overall, when standardized tests aren 't taken seriously the data collected makes it hard for educators to improve education, students lack motivation, and adds a lot of pressure to people 's everyday lives. Typically, standardized tests are multiple choice meaning students can guess for every question without understanding how to solve the problem.
The conclusion made from this study is that test-publishers and evaluators are not taking into account the many factors that can hinder the results of the tests. This particular case study, “Student Reactions to Being Wrongly Informed of Failing a High-Stakes Test,” was attention-grabbing. The type of methodology for the case study is the mixed method approach. The purpose of this study was to “assess the psychosocial impact the students being told they failed the Minnesota Basic Standards Test in mathematics” (). Although there has been a drastic increase nationally over the importance of standardized tests, there has been little research on the impacts that may occur on the students.
Standardized testing has everyone worry. The worries start from student ben stress, parents worrying, teacher trying to accomplish, and a society that wants to see improvement. Standardized test are limiting students academically. Student’s opportunities are limited because if the students can’t do what the test wants them to, they are considering not learning or the need for evaluation. Arne Duncan, who is the secretary of education has stated his own opinion: “I 'm as concerned as any parent or teacher about over-testing and teaching to the test. But I 'm equally concerned about kids slipping through the cracks if we aren 't keeping track of their progress and holding adults accountable for helping them learn.” (Duncan) There is now a case of Test Anxiety which is a psychological condition where a student experiences an immense amount of distress, which can inhibit the ability to learn and can also hurt their test performance. Many students have test anxiety and it becoming more prevalent because the test are becoming more and more important to graduate or to get into college. Also when a student receives a low score, this cause the student to feel demotivated and it discourages them from trying harder. I know from personal experience how a low score can affect me.
Because of the pressure it puts on the taker, many people believe that it should be completely abolished; this however is a total over reaction to the situation. Yes it is true that a very important test can cause stress, but we would not have to be taking it if it was not important. standardized testing it an essential tool for judging a student skill level. If it was removed it would allow people who are not cut out or not ready for collage to enter collage, this would cause a fault to form in the education system that could be detrimental to the future generations. Tests are a part of learning; they are used to find out if a student has retained the information that has been given to them.
Another reason standardized tests aren 't a good way of teaching children is that they are stressful and pointless. Studies were done that show standardized tests cause sever anxiety and stress, even in the sharpest students. Researcher Gregory J. Cizek says that these tests cause gripping anxiety, causing younger students to vomit, cry, or both(7). Another example, NCLB standards are different in every state, meaning the comparison between states education is pointless. Evidence shows that in some states, students of the same grade level were shown to be answering mostly open-ended and essay questions, while in other states, students were answering mostly multiple-choice and short answer questions(120).More evidence shows that the multiple choice format some states are using for standardized tests are a useless assessment tool.
