Conquering the Types of Terrorism Terrorism is defined as the use of violence or intimidation to draw attention to a certain cause. When most people think of terrorism, they might think of the attack on 9/11. For Americans, especially, the attack will never be forgotten and will always come up when talking about terrorism, but there is more to terrorism than this one attack. It has been going on all throughout history. Some scholars believe that the first act of terrorism was committed by a group of Zealots of Judea in the first century AD. These Zealots planned assassinations of Roman officials because they did not believe they could stay faithful to their religion while living under the Romans. Ultimately, their plans failed and every member …show more content…
People that use this type of terrorism usually act alone instead of being in a group. Most of the time, pathological terrorists do not have a true motive so they are not really seen as your common terrorist. In the United States, pathological terrorism is most common due to school shootings. It seems like school shootings have become an almost everyday occurrence. The Columbine High School shooting is the most famous example of pathological terrorism in the United States. The shooters involved in the Columbine shooting used violence for the thrill of causing fear in the students that went there. Most types of terrorism involve a motive, but pathological terrorism more often than not involves people using violence just because they can (“Types of …show more content…
Whether it be state, religious, pathological, issue oriented, or narco-terrorism, every type is dangerous. Everyday, terrorism is being fought, and methods have been formed to fight terrorism. The first thing that should be done when fighting terrorism is to find out how the terrorists act and their attack pattern. Once the attack pattern is figured out, it is easier to defend an attack. Perhaps the best way to fight to terrorism is to get people involved. It is the everyday citizen’s job to notice terrorism and notify the authorities when it is being committed (“Prevention”). There are some strategies that only work for certain types of terrorism. When fighting religious terrorism, it is useful to talk to a religious leader and form a bond. A bond will help stop violence and instead bring about compromise. Treating a religious group as enemies will only cause them to retaliate. Building bonds will work worth religious terrorism, but it would not work with narco-terrorism. A strategy for narco-terrorism would be to strengthen police and security. Drug related terrorism usually deals with gangs. Strengthening the police on an area with drug activity will weaken the activity of buying and selling of drugs causing narco-terrorism to decline. One thing that seems to work for all types of terrorism is to take out the leader of a terrorist group. If the leader is gone, most of the time the group
Terrorists all want a change in society according to their beliefs and thoughts of order by protesting with violence that terrify people. Many people are terrorizing America in the country and outside of the country. Domestic terrorists usually have disagreements
Domestic terrorism refers any forcefulness act exerted on the civilian population or the infrastructure of a particular nation. Mostly domestic terrorism is done by the citizens of the nation with the intention of coercing, intimidating the national policy. A lone wolf terrorist is a situation where a citizen performs a forceful act supporting or basing on ideology and beliefs of certain movements or groups. One person alone without any command or assistances does a lone terrorist from the group.
They justify their bloody acts on social, economic and political unfairness. Or they would take inspiration from beliefs or spiritual principles. Most forms of terrorism were motivated by warfare between races, their were struggles between the rich and poor or battles between political outcasts and elites. Most terrorism are ethnically based separatism movements, like the Palestine Liberation Organization or Republican Army. Former cartel of Medellin are considered the narco-terrorists because all they do is combine drug trafficking with the terrorism tactics to scare and bother the government and population.
Domestic terrorism has always been apart of American culture even in fiction and in reality societies. For example Charles Manson and Jeffrey Dahmer were serial killers known for their cruel actions of domestic terrorism. Jeffrey Dahmer is known for the murder of 17 men from 1978 to 1991. Charles Manson was the leader of a cult group called the Manson Family which caught national attention when the group killed actress Sharon Tate and six other people. It is a universal fact that Manson and Dahmer were not mentally stable.
Terrorism uses violence to solve their problems, which spreads panic over society. Using fear in order to gain power is a common method, but in terms of moral correctness, no religion can justify the murdering of large masses of people. Life is precious and religion, especially Christianity, emphasis how valuable life is. It takes a corrupt conscious for a person to believe that killing others will solve ones problems, just like it takes a corrupt conscious to believe it is right to justify enslaving a race of people and treating them
Many acts of terrorism still happen today. Terrorism is the use of violence against a person's property. In the 1800's, John Brown was against slavery and fought for what he believed in, but his actions were violent and he terrorized many people. Even though terrorism can be defined in many ways, John Browns actions at Harpers Ferry and Pottawatomie Creek were acts of terrorism, which justify him as a terrorist.
Today, our world has to face many crises which can not be solved in a short time such as food, water, economy, and terror. However, the terror tissue is the most challenged thing for all the governments to solve. Since September 11, 2001, not only was the US attacked by the terrorists but the other countries from over the world like Britain, Spain, Indonesia… also became the target as well, and thousands innocent people lost their lives during those surprising attacks of terrorists. Even though after September 11, 2001, US has attacked and destroyed a lot terrorists’ bases in over the world, the terrorists still survive and keep aiming to US and its allies. From the book “War on Terror” of Patrick Coaty, we will be able understand deeply how and
• We can all agree that chapter nine from the book was talking about the different kinds of crime control strategies, assumptions, reporting and investigation and most importantly solving the crime. • After I read chapter nine , I was curious to see what types of terrorisms are tremendous threats and which of those are not as much. • So let me begin by saying I’m only going to talk about three (3) types of terrorism, there are a bunch more
To start off the main point of my essay, I learned several important things regarding terrorism. There are many different types of terrorism, such as state-sponsored terrorism, criminal terrorism as well as dissent terrorism. There are many reasons terrorism has become commonplace in society, it can be that radical extremists do not like our way of life, and try to destroy it, or it can involve conflicts with territory, globalization, and finally criminal terrorist acts done by the drug cartel. Surprisingly, there is more political and social issues connected to terrorism than I originally thought. For instance, it is stated as a social construct, terrorism is used to demonize people, societies and situations.

One of the theories that can be used to explain terrorism is rational choice model. According to Barnard et al. (2015) rational choice theory was developed in 1986 by Derek Cornish and Ronald Clarke. This theory assumes that offenders evaluate the cost and reward of committing a crime. The rational choice model presumes that intelligence and free will, discern that criminals to have limited rationality.
The world today is facing a crisis and there seems to be no resolution in sight. The war on terrorism has been going on for many, many years and it appears as if the leaders of the world are baffled as to stop it or if nothing else, control it. Many scholars have a difficult time attempting to define a good definition for the word terrorism. Many believe it is a difficult word to define because there are so many interruptions to the word. It will depend on what part of the country one is in, but for the universal approach to the definition many believe terrorism is “the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce esp for political purposes” (Dyson, 2012, p. 19).
Most are not planned in advance or targets the victim ahead of time, they are merely chance encounters. Sporadic attacks with high numbers of casualties are more likely to be planned in advance, such as Dylan Roof’s murder of nine African-Americans. Roof presented himself as a white supremacist, who murdered churchgoers because he wanted to start a race war. He was convicted of hate crimes and sentenced to death, but never charged with terrorism. Labeling something as terrorism has legal ramifications, too, and is not applied lightly.
After a terrorist attack of any kind there are always consequences that must be faced. Sometimes the point of the terrorist attacks is because the organization wished to send a message or to influence policy in their favor. However, after the 9/11 attacks administrators realized that the United States was not prepared for a tragedy of this kind and had little to no measures to prevent one, this lead them to create new programs and policies. Terrorist organization’s goal often comes down to one of the following: regime change, territorial change, policy change, social control and status quo maintenance. The main purpose of a terror attack may well be to influence public policy.
It is difficult to define the nature and boundaries of terrorism. Some forms of terrorism are political loaded and can be difficult to fight with legal tools. In orders to fight
