CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 INTRODUCTION
In this chapter, the concept of patient health monitoring will be reviewed; the theory of components and existing works will be reviewed also.
2.2 OVERVIEW OF PATIENT HEALTH MONITORING.
According to Hudson L.Respir.Care 1985, patient health monitoring systems can be defined as “repeated or continuous observations or measurements of the patients, their physiological functions, and the function of the life support equipment for the purpose of guiding management decisions including when to make therapeutic interventions and assessments of these interventions” [1].
Patient health monitoring is needed in situations where the patient is;
• In the case of a drug overdose or anesthesia
• In a life threatening condition, where there is a warning of a heart attack
• In a critical

The main purpose was creating an ECG monitoring and alert system that detects cardiac abnormalities like tachycardia and bradycardia. The downside to this project was its need for medical professionals for operation
[4] Proposed a heart rate monitor using a low cost microcontroller, AT89C52, He measured heart rate from the fingertip using infra-led transmitter and receiver sensor box. The rate is then averaged and displayed on a text based LCD, but does not have voice output to aid visually impaired persons.
[5] Proposed a microcontroller based heart rate monitor using fingertip sensors. The design uses the optical technology to detect the flow of blood through the fingertip.
Marsha McMillen Unit 5 Math Discussion After researching the metric system uses in the medical field, I found quite a few uses just used in the billing and coding field. It is used for cost, production to reduce supply and labor costs, clinical performance, such as quality of patient care, also called “patient outcome” data. Other uses are, Patient Safety, nearly 100,000 Americans die each year, because of medical mistakes, that happened during their stay at the hospital, these accidents can lead to longer recoveries and permanent disabilities. We use metrics in-patient surveys after treatment/release, to measure patient satisfaction of their care.
Calls were analyzed within the standard GRASP® MIStro® DataWorks analysis program (Staples & Earle, 2007). Unfortunately, the study did not capture patient outcomes, breathing statuses, vital signs, or clinical progress.
These results are not completely logically due to the fact of the unavailability there is of this technology, not all collegiate and youth programs are going to have access to telemedicine, making it not logical. Aside from this, the information is still reliable and sufficient. The authors organized the information all in one section, but inside of this it is still relatively simple to
The projected goals and outcomes of this project are to increase quality of report, increase patient safety and increase patient satisfaction. Introduction This paper proposes to outline the impact of a standardized bedside reporting system that involves the patient as opposed to the age-old report method conducted at the nurse’s station between only nurses. Evaluation of this impact includes quality
The following scenario will best reflect my practice and use of informatics. The scenario is not representative of a particular patient but is a combination of daily events in my position so that no patient rights are violated. I am three hours into my shift as the assistant nurse manager (charge nurse) of a busy emergency department (ED) with my responsibilities in the department being to manage the flow of a shift that will see roughly 100 new patients during the 12 hours but also oversee the care of the 5-20 long term patient who are listed as observation or inpatient holds. We can expand to 60 beds with the use of hall beds. I have a bank of monitors to my left which display the EKG and vital signs of over 48 patients.
"It's much cheaper to keep people well than it is to treat them when they're sick," he says. "Part of wellness will be monitoring what's specifically important about each patient, like bathroom scales for congestive heart failure patients or glucometers for diabetics that transmit data directly to their EHRs." -John D. Halamka, MD, MS(McBride). That being said the Electronic Health Record or EHR has made monitoring health even easier with the ability for patients to access their records from home, email their doctors among other
Computer-based algorithms provide patient-specific assistance. An early warning system that provides timely alerts designed to ensure that appropriate actions are initiated as soon as problems begin to develop. Four key applications have been developed to achieve these goals.

MEDITECH flashes errors and warnings to make sure the nurse double-checks the orders (Hunter, 2011). Another plus to using MEDITECH is that allergy checking is done automatically, as well as dose checking, and the ability relevant clinical data accessibility (Hunter, 2011). An example of a safety check was available with blood glucose levels. MEDITECH would have you type in the amount calibrated from the glucometer and underneath the place where you typed the number was a list of normal ranges (Hunter, 2011). This allowed nurses to understand what is normal and what is abnormal and needs intervention.
Depending on the type of office and the patients there in, will determine what electronic health system you will need. Some doctors have patients that need a high level of care and lots of tests and other documented information, like cardiology. Other offices might be able to use a simple program because they don 't have many patients or the patients they do have don 't require extensive documentation. You have to consider the amount of time you may, or may not have to train the staff and get all the information transferred. Once the needs of the facility are determined, it is then important to decide on a system that will coincide.
I had to remember that my “patient” was still alive even though my computer system was not. In this situation I learned routine assessments along with the electronic health record are the best way to monitor patient outcomes. This is one of, if not the biggest, lesson the SimChart has taught me this
• No interventions for post sedation were implemented for oxygen and vital signs below the normal limits. • During conscious sedation respiratory therapy should have been notified and standing by, as well as evaluating the patient post sedation. They should have been notified of the low oxygen levels. • The LPN and the nurse did not notify the MD that the patient’s vital signs and oxygen were low. • The LPN reset alarms without notifying the nurse or the MD.
When interpreting concentration measurements, factors that need to be considered include the sampling time in relation to drug dose, dosage history, patient response, and the desired medicinal targets. The goal of therapeutic drug monitoring is to use suitable concentrations of difficult-to-manage medications to optimize clinical outcomes in patients in various clinical situations. Keywords: Drug monitoring, therapeutic; Pharmacokinetics Introduction Therapeutic drug monitoring is generally defined as the measurement of specific drugs at timed intervals in order to maintain a relatively constant concentration of the medication in the bloodstream. Monitored drugs tend to have a narrow therapeutic index, that is a ratio between the toxic and therapeutic doses of medications.
Intro The Apple Watch is a smartwatch created by Apple Inc. It includes fitness tracking and health-oriented capabilities as well as incorporation with iOS and other Apple products and services. Apple announced the Apple Watch with three variants. Firstly there is the original apple watch, secondly there is the apple watch sport and lastly there is the apple watch edition, in which the case is crafted from 18 karat gold.
Stethoscopes are a basic though vital part of a nurse’s arsenal and though common place in hospitals, are surprisingly complicated tools. Whether you are a nurse or a nursing student, choosing the right stethoscope is of paramount importance. The life of your patient – or featureless dummy- could depend on it. It’s impossible to declare one stethoscope to be above all others as it
