For decades, women have been discriminated against due to limited job opportunities, low wages, and minimal acceptance to colleges. As an educated congress woman Shirley Chisholm was motivated to make changes in discrimination against women.

One may ask what is courage. Well the definition of courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. Other people would say courage is a feeling inside that allows anyone to do what they want fear free. Chris McCandless had the type of courage where he had no fear but others did. Courage can't just be said it has to be shown. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, Mr. L.T. Morrision is the most brave, loyal, and kind person you will meet. Mr. Morrison showed courage by standing to the Wallaces, he moved Kaleb Wallace's car off the road, and when he stayed with the Logans even though he could get hurt Mr. Morrison’s actions proved that he knows what is right and he is going to stand up for that no matter what. Even though his parents were killed by whites, he stays calm and knows exactly how to deal with the situation. Mr. Morrison will give up anything for the people he loves.

What is courage? Many ask this question, but get various answers. Webster Dictionary states that courage is the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. The distinction between men and women in the Antebellum-era Southern United States can be identified in the roles that each gender was expected to fulfill as parents, spouses and citizens. While young men and women alike were encouraged to marry and immediately start a family, females were primarily given the task of caring for their children and husband. Because they were viewed as the ‘morally superior gender’, women were supposed to raise the next generation of obedient citizens, while men were free to pursue a career and get involved in politics. Courage doesn 't just help you it can also help other people around you too. Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Mildred D. Taylor uses Cassie Logan as an example of courage, although she has faced many rough and harsh times she has used courage to overcome them. Cassie faces many challenges but some of the ones that stood out to me were, standing up to the teacher when Little Man did not want his book because of the condition that it was in, standing up for herself at the Mercantile when she was not waited on, and T.J when he was not being so nice to Cassie and the Loganś. Cassie was a very smart and intelligent person. She always wanted to know what was going on because she wanted to know if there was something that she could do to help. Cassie could always come up with a way to help

Cruelty, inhumane, and discrimination are words that highly exemplify the radical times in the 1960s. Very few people were treated with respect including women and anyone of color. Kids could not express themselves and dress how they wanted without being judged. The 1960s were definitely not a time we would want to go back to. Although some people may argue that the 1960s were better and safer, today’s society is a lot less judgemental and accepting. The 1960s was definitely not a time I would consider to be better than today’s society.

What is political courage? Is it the act of simply upholding the rights of the everyday man while in a position of power? Or is it something even more? One person is to be chosen every year to be congratulated on their acts of political courage. President Lyndon B Johnson’s chance has now arrived. “The true democracy, living growing and inspiring, puts its faith in the people - faith that the people will not simply elect men who will represent their views ably and faithfully, but will also elect men who will exercise their conscientious judgement - faith that the people will not condemn those whose devotion to principle leads them to unpopular courses, but will reward courage, respect honor, and ultimately recognize right”(Kennedy).

The issue of women’s rights and how different societies and cultures deal with it had been on the table for many centuries. In the United States of America during the 1800s, women began to move toward and demand getting equal rights as men, they decided to speak up and fight for their stolen rights. In the 1960s, continued working toward their goal, women broadened their activities through the women’s rights movement which aimed to help them in gaining their right to receive education, occupy the same jobs that were once titled only for men, and get an access to leadership positions. The women’s rights movement has a great impact on women today, although it started a long time ago, but it did not stop and women are reaping their fruit today,

The declaration of independence states that all men and women are created equal. This document, along with the constitution, is what the administration of the United States was founded on. The men who created these documents were citizens striving for equal rights and representation in government. Ironically, these rights the founding fathers worked so hard to create for themselves were not granted to women in their newly established nation. Fortunately, due to the tireless work of decades of activist’s, laws have changed, amendments added to the constitution, and rights granted to those who were previously unjustly denied. America gained its independence in 1776 with the expectation that every American should have liberty and equality. However, American women did not have the right to vote until 1920, which was almost more than 140 years after the United States was established. Women could do little to protect themselves and promote their careers due to being treated unequally and inferior to men. During the 19th and the early 20th century, women were working hard and fighting for gender equality, so that more and more women could live a better life with basic civil rights in their hometowns. In reality, women’s equality was challenged by traditional conventions in the fields of biological difference in sexes, religion and gender roles, and different perspectives towards these conventions of different people made women’s civil rights controversial.

Fear is probably the most commonly thought-of reason for needing courage. When one feels fear taking over but chooses to act bravely, that shows courage. Bravery and valor is a type of courage that is often shown by armed forces. Serving the country takes a certain type of courage that most people do not have. Honestly, when I think of the word “courage,” I think of those who risk their lives for us to live in a free country

Courage is having the ability to act, despite fear, pain, or uncertainty. Courage does not suppress fear but allows one to continue in the face of fear. I made the decision, for example, to tell my parents about my sexuality. I am gay, and I knew the scrutiny I could face at home, and in society if I told my parents. Although fearful, I was courageous, and shared with them that I was going though. I educated them and wanted our relationship to keep growing. I had to stay strong, and true to myself despite my mother and father not understanding my sexuality. I found strength inside myself to move beyond fear and become truly happy. It took courage to achieve happiness despite not living within society’s standards. It is easy to be comfortable, but it takes courage to stand up, be yourself, and live a fulfilling life. Courage is one of the most essential virtues, because without courage one cannot exhibit any other virtue
