H.G. Wells leaves the readers in awe of his artistic style and captivates the wondrous imaginations of those who enjoy his stories. His prolific writings enable the understanding of the vastness of the universe and the knowledge thereof. Perhaps for this very reason, he remains one of the most prominent science fiction writers of all
I learned a lot from this book and found it to be both illuminating and horrifying. I found it astonishing that the soldiers of
Dystopian novels have an entrancing factor that allows them to captivate the American public like no other genre. The mass popularity gained by these novels can be seen dating all the way back to 1950’s with the publishing of George Orwell’s 1984, and through the present day with the publication of various dystopian novels such as Divergent, Maze Runner, and The Hunger Games. The main reason why these dystopian worlds resonate with so many people is because they address present day problems in outlandish but conceivable ways, "whatever its artistic or philosophic qualities, a book about the future can interest us only if its prophecies look as though they might conceivably come true."(Beauchamp). While The Handmaid 's Tale focus on a variety of issues, such as the mistreatment of women, it also realistically illustrates the mental deterioration that occurs during prolonged periods of isolation in captivity. Atwood clearly emphasizes this point through the inclusion of Offred 's inner thoughts; which in turn, help to illuminate to the reader the process of this deterioration.
Going to the universities’ library earlier this month to rent three films, - 500 days of Summer, Annie Hall and High Fidelity- was the first step to my critical writing and analysing process. I spent some time at home, to watch these three completely different movies. Although there is one theme that captures the common motif in these three movies, the theme Romance. The standard model suggests that a film wherein the plot revolves around the love feelings and love between two protagonists can be defined as a romance film. It is a well-known fact that love makes people do strange things, Shakespeare himself even said: “Love makes blind”.
We never got the chance to write about a topic we were interested in or talk about our opinions on a certain topic. I feel like high school is just a waste of time, all they would say the four years is that in college we would have to write four to five papers, but they never showed us how. Now that I had finished my first semester here at Daley, I sort of know how to write a proper paper by the writing process that I had created when I took English 100.
To begin with, the Trojan War is considered to be a myth by many scholars due to lack of discoveries that have been made at the site of the battle, which took place in the city of Troy, located in the far northwest region of Turkey. However, a couple of things that we surround ourselves with today have been named after presumed warriors that fought at Troy. Throughout the years many artifacts have been found at Troy, but it is unknown if those artifacts are connected with the war. Secondly, the cleaning products named Ajax were named after a Greek hero whose slogan was “Stronger than Dirt”. Following that, the Achilles tendon was named after a Greek hero named Achilles, who was killed by taking an arrow to a tendon on the back of his leg.
The past time of rationality is called Pre-Socratic, not because the philosophers all died before Socrates did philosophy, but since they were not impacted by Socrates and did not reply to his idea. The following time of rationality is called Hellenistic, not on the grounds that the Greeks beforehand did no reasoning, but rather in light of the fact that the endeavors of Alexander the Great changed everything. Established logic is centered around the reasoning of Socrates, those affected by him and the logic created by those individuals before Alexander the Great. There are various philosophical schools began in this time, and various popular philosophers. The Hellenistic period saw scholars who concentrated on reason as opposed to the mission for truth.
The story really demonstrated the view of the other person in the story, without that character being the main character. The way Shel Silverstein wrote this story was very different from any other story because it was complex. It was different. No one had ever written something in the same style as him. Before reading this story, i had briefly heard of it, but never read it.
Paragraph Scaffold – Ancient Greece I learned a lot from my class’s recent study of ancient Greece. Before I started learning about this early civilization, I thought about the battles between Sparta and Athens. I also thought about the roles between men and women in both Sparta and Athens. Now I understand a lot more about ancient Greece. For example, I learned that at age seven in Sparta, boys get sent to the military to be trained to be soldiers.
While I was waiting for the writing series event to begin, and for the author to speak, I realized I had never attended such an event as this before. As an adamant lover of writing, and reading, I have never heard an author read his or her own work aloud in person. I have seen videos online of the such, but I never witnessed it in person. I had enjoyed the experience of hearing the author Yarrott Benz share something so important to him and something which he worked hard on. I have never heard an author talk about his process or the difficulties of writing his or work either.
