Since the dawn of independence, the peace and harmony in India gets disturbed, not because of reasons only domestic in nature. The first serious threat to national integration and communal harmony came immediately after independence and the reasons for the same being the relations between India and Pakistan. All the communities in India were in harmony with each other since ages. There is hardly any other country in the world than India which has a great diversity of culture, religion, language, tradition, community etc. People live and think in terms of their respective religions, faiths and tongues, and seek to serve their selfish ends without thinking of the national good. Such thinking is dangerous and is bound to lead to the disintegration of the country in the long run. The need of the hour, therefore, is to fight the forces of dis-unity and dis-harmony and to work ceaselessly for the achievement of national harmony and peace. PEACE IN NORTHEAST INDIA AND BANGLADESH
The relations between India and Bangladesh is a major factor determining peace and harmony in North East India. It is because Bangladesh is one of the safe havens for the insurgent groups. When the relations between the two countries is on a good note, then the insurgent groups find it difficult to seek refuge in Bangladesh, which can act as their camp for organizing attacks against India. The insurgents depend upon Bangladesh for illicit arms as well.
The insurgency problem was at the highest during the reign of Khaleda Zia’s government when the relations between the two countries were not flourishing. With Sheikh Hasina’s government , the relationship has blossomed again.
