In the book ‘Fahrenheit 451’ being a pedestrian is considered a crime. Why would society make “being a pedestrian” a crime? In another world — or maybe in the future of this world — being a pedestrian could be considered a crime. The question is why. When one is allowed to be free outside, and clear their minds, it makes provisions for the access of thought and ideas.
Pedestrians are people who walk — there could be several reasons for this, but before diving into this, take a look into the word that is “pedestrian”. Oxford Languages defines pedestrians as “a person walking along a road or in a developed area.” It goes on to define the origin, being Latin, “from Latin pedester or pedestris ‘going on foot’, also ‘written in prose, prosaic’ +ian”. The reasons vary, however main ones include transportation, pleasure, exercise, calming the mind, and relieving stress. Many citizens across the world are pedestrians. They rely on the act of walking distances to do several things. It may be to attend work. It may be to address the needs of a child, or children. Conduct an inquiry at New York City. The population of New York City is 8,992,908. The population of Charlotte is 1.112 million. Charlotte is approximately twelve times bigger than New York City. Therefore, a person could conclude that there are too many people, and not enough road space for cars. Accordingly, many of the people walk to all of the places they go. Including — but not limited to — work, grocery stores, and more. The government of Fahrenheit 451 did not want to permit citizens of their society to do this.
