In referring to persons as scientists, Kelly only meant that we are all constantly engaged in the process of understanding ourselves and the world around us. Like scientists in the laboratory, we test this understanding by making predictions about the observable outcomes of events. And like applied scientists and engineers, we use our refined understanding to reshape ourselves or some aspect of the world in which we live. In this way, scientific activity is a constant and essential aspect of human existence. Kelly's description of personality in terms of cognitive processes. We are capable of interpreting behaviors and events and of using this understanding to guide our behavior and to predict the behavior of other people.(They are used to anticipate events) …show more content…
People differ not only in their construct but also in the way in which they organize them. Organization of construct also serves to reduce conflict for the person. For example if a married man knows that his wife and family come first, even before his mother, then potential conflicts can be minimized. Doubts as to which construct is superordinate can be painful as many husbands have learned Kelly's individuality corollary proposed that Persons differ from each other in their construction of events. We have our own interpretations and subjective cons.No two people interpret events in the same way. Each of us experiences an event from our own subjective point of view. This corollary underscores Kelly's belief that it is the subjective interpretation of an event, rather than the event itself, that is most important. For example, When my cousin was just a child, she leaned in quickly to pet my dog and was bitten. This cause her to expects that all dogs that appear well behaved with their owners will not allow her to pet
Introduction In our society, we often refer to a person as an individual. When used, this word describes a single entity, one that stands on its own and is separated from everything else. However, through this denotation, we can develop the misconception that an individual is singular in nature; we think that he or she is comprised of only one distinct element. This element, from a psychological standpoint, may be described as our consciousness, while others may call it our free-will.
When Watson published his views on psychology, most of his peers laughed it off. For some reason, people were having a hard time believing his “observable traits” perspective. Given psychology was always seen as inside the brain, he really had to think outside of the box for this one. However, he pursued. It wasn’t until this son of a gun decided to conduct the Little Albert Experiment that people’s heads started turning.
A difference in self-identity often causes conflict between individuals. Head cook at weddings and Funerals by Vi Plotnikoff demonstrates how differences in beliefs, values, future plans and different opinions can cause conflict between a family, community or individuals. Beliefs and values often differ between people, just as Marusa and Aunt Florence. Murusa is considered a perfect girl, she came from a profoundly traditional Doukhobor family. Marisa 's mother, Aunt Florence was a fairly traditional as well as having strong ties to the Doukhobor community.
112). This integration was seeming less at first but quickly became apparent that some space was needed. Specifically the relationship encountered opposing forces, or “dialectical tensions” (Baxter, 1990). Armfeild describes this form of dialectical tension as “autonomy/connectedness”, stating it “points at how couple must strike a balance between wanting to share time, space, conversation, and joint activities, but also have needs for separate space, other relationships, and individual interests.” (p. 118).
How each of these individual readers interprets the story is the difference between reading and understanding the
Furthermore, examples such as this highlight the mutual dependence of humans upon one another, and the importance of the continuation of their predictable behaviours. That is, individuals use their past experiences of human interaction to understand and anticipate the
The individuals’ perspective would shape the way how individuals construct the knowledge about the world.(Weber,2004, p.5) Saunders emphasizes on how the researchers comprehend the world according to their different roles as social actors. This construction of knowledge suits people and social actors better than some objects such as computers. Sometimes, even knowledge processed by the computers can be well interpreted by the interpretivism as the continual process of the computer programming consists of symbolic interactions that people have written the subjective language and rules into. It contains certain degree of uncertainty and ambiguity.
Families are said to constitute realities in which most of one’s attributes are constructed, based on the family interactions, beliefs, values as well as the behaviours that are seen in the specific families one is brought up into (Archer & McCarthy, 2007). However, even though most of one’s personal characteristics may be heavily influenced by their families; people do have a sense of individuality that makes them unique from any other person in the family (Becvar & Becvar, 2013). Therefore, one may argue that it is these differences that may cause misunderstandings in families.
expectations that results in negative societal reactions. Mr. Kelley’s action was negative deviance because he rejected the accepted norm expectations and society's collective evaluation resulted in negative reactions because the action he committed caused the death of 26 innocent people. In other words, Mr.Kelley’s action had detrimental effects on individuals and society as a whole. Subsequently, this type of deviance is best explained by individual behavior because Mr. Kelley executed the mass shooting by himself.
According to Kind (2004), by embracing the intentional stance in a person, we will try to define and forecast the behaviours by assuming as if its activities are administered by values and needs similar to a sane person. Intentional states are also known as the mental states, for example, beliefs and desires which possess the property of "aboutness," that is, they are either about or directed at objects or states of affairs in the world. In addition, the intentional stance will also be able to provide us with useful gains of predictive power. For instance, the example of a chess-playing computer is able to be viewed as a physical system operating according to the laws of physics, a designed mechanism consisting of parts with specific functions that interact with each other to produce specific behaviour or can also be viewed as an intentional system acting rationally relative to a certain set of beliefs and goals (Kind, 2004).
Conflict theory can best be defined as viewing self interest as a basic human motivation. This human motivation comes from the will to survive and a strong desire to fulfill one’s needs and desires in life. It is said that conflict typically arises between individuals, groups or family members out of competing interests. Conflict theory doesn’t see conflict as being problematic, instead conflict theory suggests that conflict is necessary and often desirable to produce change (Chibucos, Leite & Weis, 2005). When it comes to the family unit, conflict theory argues that power among family members is unequally distributed with the male figure typically having the most power within the family.
In this essay, I will be discussing conflict as a result of opposing beliefs
If we look at the aim of psychology from this perspective, the aim is to look beyond superficial differences such as gender, race and culture to unveil these processes. In traditional psychology the “Self” is seen as a restricted or bounded and autonomous being. Internal attributes such as emotions, independence, thoughts, contextual factors as well as social factors defines the
There are eight concepts that form its foundation (Henderson & Thompson, 2018): 1. Differentiation of self - refers to the manner in which a person is able to separate thoughts and feelings, respond to anxiety, and cope with the variables of life while pursuing personal goals. 2. Detriangulation of Self from the family emotional system - represents the smallest stable network of human relationship systems (larger relationship systems can be perceived as a network of interlocking triangles). It also refers to two family members bring a third into a conflict situation.
