The chilling allegory, Something Wicked This Way Comes, written by Ray Bradbury, teaches readers about friendship, time, fear and good vs. evil through the tale of two thirteen year old boys, Jim Nightshade and Will Holloway, and their coming-of-age story. This novel was published in 1962 and later set a new approach to writing horror stories. Bradbury uses Jim Nightshade to depict the evils of desires and Will Holloway to show how the devotion of a true friend can save people. In this novel, each character has a specific role that teaches the reader a lesson on morals.

Through the use of characters, the theme is presented in a way that allows the reader to realise the harsh reality of the subject matter, yet it is still demonstrated in an approachable and relatable way. The main characters, as well as some of the less significant characters in the texts allow the theme of racism and prejudice to shine. Both texts deal with a specific sequence of events in which readers can understand the prejudicial aspect of life in that era. Both texts contract with different nationalities and different time periods. Some characteristics of Atticus are shown through the character of Charlie’s father, both Atticus and Charlie’s father were wise father figures that have good morals and believed in doing the right thing. They both also show commitment to racial equality because Atticus defended a black man in a court case which was publicly unacceptable and Charlie’s father explodes with anger at the four men who are racist and abuse Charlie calling him a “red fucking rat” (pg. 269). The use of these racist comments, enables the reader’s to feel sympathy and compassion towards the characters. Therefore, the reader is able to understand significant aspects of racism. The significance of the title is to demonstrate that the protagonist is a good person. That he wouldn’t do any actions to harm anyone in which is seen when he was having second thoughts of leaving his wife, Faith for the night by the look of her troubled face. Perhaps, the author named the story “Young Goodman Brown” in order to foreshadow his actions. The significance of his wife’s name is to show that there is still some faith and goodness in him left to overcome any negative influences. The presentation of Good vs. Evil is one of the main themes in the novel, Dracula. The portrayal of good and evil is seen in each character throughout the book. The characters considered “evil” in the novel are Dracula and his vampire brides. Dracula converts humans into vampires and has immense power over certain individuals. Everything he does demonstrates that there is no good in him at all. His vampire brides assist to Dracula’s dark deeds. What they all have in common is that they prey upon humans. On the other hand, the characters that are considered “good” in the novel are Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, John Seward, Quincey Morris and Arthur Holmwood. Throughout the novel, the good characters are constantly doing generous deeds to save others from Dracula.

In Dracula, Stoker portrays the presence of good vs evil by contrasting the two in a straightforward and odd manner. The characters interact having different sides, but sometimes couldn’t tell if a specific character has a personality of goodness in themselves or not. The main character in the novel, Dracula, is considered evil. His appearance and expressions that appear seem to have an evil sense to the others characters. The book also shows elements of gothicism, when the setting starts to turn into the daytime to nighttime quickly, which represents the role of light going against darkness.

Imagine, being accused of a crime you didn’t commit by your neighbors and friends out of jealousy, and desire. This is what many people in the town of Salem had to go through during the time of the Salem Witch Trials. People's motives such as: gaining and maintaining power, and aspirations for what other people had caused them to make irrational, and atrocious decisions. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, desire and power drive characters to create chaos in the community.

Irony is often used in literature to illustrate certain situations to the audience. In some pieces of literature that might be pointing out an unjust system, in others that might be to add a comedic effect, but whatever situation the author wants to illustrate, irony is very beneficial. Through small and witty, one-liners, or a bigger dramatic irony situation contrasting two very different situations, irony can be very beneficial for the reader to understand the story. Every obstacle in life makes you stronger even if at the time you think you’re going through hell and don’t know how you’re going to get out. In the novel Lord Of The Flies by William Golding the author uses many ways in each different situation to develop the theme of the novel. Every story has situations that are shocking to the reader, and this book was great at letting the reader know what’s going on before the character.

In 1776, the United States became a free nation independent from Great Britain. It represented a world where all individuals were equal and had the opportunity to start anew. However, that was not the case for African Americans. They did not receive the same opportunities as white citizens and did not get their “freedom” declared until 1865 with the creation of the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery (The Library of Congress). To this day, the portrayal of African Americans is used as a tool to enhance the image of a white man or woman.

Jean Jaques Rousseau was partially correct in his statement that all are born good, however, society creates images of bad people. Man is born evil because of his desire for possession and hunger for power, shown throughout current events and recent news. The absence of guidance shows that man does not need bad influence in order to be bad, but needs good influence to be good. “The Lottery” is a short story by Shirley Jackson. The story commences with a vivid description of the summer day in the town, giving us the idea that the day will be good. When the lottery begins, families begin to draw slips of paper from the black box. Finally, when Bill Hutchinson withdrew the slip of paper with the black dot, his wife Tessie starts yelling that it wasn 't fair. When the second drawing was held only among the Hutchinson’s family, Tessie gets the same piece of paper with the dot and is stoned to death. Jackson uses imagery and irony, as well as symbolism to make us aware of the custom, and violence and tradition as the themes of this short story.

Irony is defined as “an event or a result that is the opposite of what is expected to happen” (Webster 344). Flannery O’Conner’s short story, “Good Country People” deploys irony as a means of projecting her message that perception does not always coincide with reality. This theme of misconception is highlighted in the manipulative relationship between Hulga Hopewell and Manly Pointer. Hulga obtains a doctorate degree in philosophy and believes she is knowledgeable of the world, this is until she is deceived by Manly whom she perceives to be an innocent Christian simpleton, but he is none of those things. O’Conner projects a series of ironic undertones throughout her short story, the interactions between Manly Pointer and Hulga Hopewell utilizes irony to expose the truth behind the character’s real selves through their relationship with each other.
