Will Odyssues make his journey back home safely? It’s a poem written by a Greek poet, Homer. It’s a story of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca that wanders the Mediterranean for ten years. The theme for The Odyssey is perseverance, which is shown through the use of conflict, internal conflict, and also character flaw. There are some major conflicts in the Odyssey. In the story Odysseus comes across situations that he thinks he can take advantage of because he thinks he can get away with doing things. Because he thinks so highly of himself and he is useduse to others thinking highly of himself, he gets into some major conflicts. In the Odyssey it states, “Ah how shameless- the way these mortals blame the gods. From us alone, they say, come all their miseries, yes, but they themselves, with their own reckless ways, compound their pains beyond their proper share” (Homer 32-35). The hardships he came across on his way home was a conflict he battles within himself. The Odyssey writes, “I am Laertes' son, Odysseus. Men hold me formidable for guile in peace and war: this fame has gone abroad to the sky’s rim” (Homer 19-22) Everyone thought highly of Odysseus. They believed that he was smart and could handle anything. Sometimes Odysseus could be arrogant and that took away from people thinking highly of him. His pride turned into arrogance when he defeated Troy. His arrogance created difficulty for him and his crew to get back home. The Odyssey observes, “Endure, my heart; you’ve suffered worse than this” (Homer 309). This is when Odysseus is Odysseus’ is struggling but he has suffered worse and he can overcome the difficult situations he is put in. The quote is to encourage Odysseus to not give up and
