Creativity: Literature Review Creativity is the phenomenon in which something new and valuable is formed which can be tangible or intangible. A product is called creative if it is new. Creative process or thinking results in products that are new for an individual. Creativity is a result of creative process but it also depends on the personality characteristics and motivation of the individual. Creative process occurs when a person intentionally produces a new product while working on a task. Whether the products are valued or not by the society it is considered as creative and a person producing it is called creative. Next we have tried to explore the various theories on creativity. In the first stage is divergent thinking which generates multiple ideas. The second stage is convergent thinking which uses the ideas as input and narrows it down to a workable product. However this conclusion does not mean that creative products are a result of divergent thinking and require any sort of special thinking. New things can be produced without special thought process that breaks away from the past. Guilford’s work led to a research on psychometric aspect of creativity. This focused on measuring psychological characteristics of creative people. Guilford’s tests were used to measure the thought process of creative people. Other investigators also developed their own tests but all research was based on the assumption that creative thinking is a result on divergent thinking. Guilford also proposed that personality also has bearing on creativity. For example it was suggested that flexible personality structure allowed a person to think creatively. Creative person should have the following resources. • A set of intellectual abilities: ability to see problems, ability to recognize viable ideas, ability to persuade others about the values of the idea • Knowledge of domain • Independent thinking • Environment supporting creative thinking Evolution Theories of Creativity: Blind Variation and Selective Retention Campbell proposes that the first stage of creativity is random generation of ideas in response to some problems. These ideas should be tested to see if they meet the present needs. It should come about by rejecting the past for constructing the new.
