Making friends was difficult growing up. I was constantly moving, always “the new kid”. Then after a while, when I finally made friends, we would move again. Sometimes in the middle of the school year. This process stopped in fourth grade. The court found my parents “unfit” to take care of my siblings and I, due to how much school we had missed in the last couple of years, and my sister and I were placed into foster care, while my autistic brother was sent to live in a group home. School was never a friend of mine. I never knew what was going on because there was so much education I had missed, and going to school while in foster care was no different. Eventually my mother received full custody of us again, and I attended Burgess in sixth …show more content…
I decided to join Relay for Life. Relay for Life is a large fundraiser group for the American Cancer Society. They host a two day event every year at the southbridge football field where volunteers create teams and set up booths with games and raffles. People around the community walk around the football field and buy tickets and food that go directly to cancer patients and research. I created a team, and got my sister and cousin to join me in fundraising. Other groups had teams with as many as fifty people but we were the only team made out of only kids, and just at thirteen, I was the youngest captain in the entire fundraiser. We didn’t need adults to do what we believed in. Even just last year, when my sister and cousin dropped out, I was the only person on my team. With no help from anyone, I still managed to raise over a hundred dollars during the two days because if I couldn’t save my cousin, at least I could try to save other people going through the same thing. Participating in Relay for life makes me feel like I’m part of something bigger. This year will be my fourth year doing this fundraiser, but definitely not my
The role of event chair entitles me to completely organize, our entire event from scratch, to opt for the most successful Relay for Life event of the year. As of now, my event has raised twenty one percent of our goal, and it only increases, with each day. This experience has been extremely rewarding,
Some recent volunteer activities/events were free yoga in the park, a canned good drive, and a free dental clinic for those in need. A graduate
Available to everyone in a non-competitive atmosphere, participants can raise funds for fighting cancer by completing the run to the best of their ability.
I organized multiple clothing, food, and book drives. While I was a Girl Scout, I earned my Bronze and Silver award: the second and third highest awards a Girl Scout can earn. Some other examples of events that I’ve planned to give back to my community are cheer clinics, movie nights, and 8th grade prom. I also have gift wrapped at the KMCC during the holiday season, tutored students at the Intermediate School, volunteered at the Ramstein Bazaar, picked up trash around the base, and bagged groceries at the commissary multiple times. Taking action in the community is important to me because I like to make positive impacts that benefit the lives of
Of my many volunteer and paid extra-curricular activities, the most important to me is the National Art Honor Society, which extends artistic activities to my community. We organize two school events: the Festival of Trees and the Talent Competition. The Festival of Trees is an event when every school club can choose to donate and decorate a tree that we set up. All of the money raised goes to an organization of our choice. For the last 4 years, we have donated to Street Grace, which benefits the fight against human trafficking, especially in the Metro Atlanta area.
The activities and events we host are always very fun and exciting. I have been a volunteer since my freshman year of high school, which is when they allow you to be a volunteer. Before that you may participate in the activities. I feel that this volunteer project does benefit both me and the recipients, because I get to experience such an amazing act of kindness that changes a person 's life forever. It also benefits the recipients, because they get to have their lives changed forever.
I was lost. Friends were not at my disposal. Time was in abundance. Thoughts was all i had. Freshman through Christmas break of my sophomore year I attended Berks Catholic High School, but before that I graduated from a feeder school named Scared Heart School.
From as early as I could remember I noticed I was not like the others kids. I had an interest for things most kids would not be interested in. I liked interacting with people, knowing about people and their life stories; I wanted to help in anyway that I could when I would hear everyone’s problems. I thought outside the box throughout my whole childhood and I wanted to make the most out of my knowledge. I told myself that I was going to dedicate my life to helping my community.
In my community, I donate to St Jude’s Hospital for cancer research. Almost half of my family has had some kind of cancer. Donating to St. Jude’s Hospital helps me give back to people who have already lost their lives, are undergoing treatment, or anyone who might have cancer in the future. In my 7th grade year, another student and I raised money to help find a cure for Type One Diabetes. The money that we raised went to an organization called “Beyond Type One” so that they can use it to perform scientific experiments to find a cure.
It has been been a goal of mine to attend the United States Naval Academy after visiting Annapolis with my grandparents in 2012. Since visiting the Naval Academy I knew that I wanted to serve America with the utmost honor and integrity. The Naval Academy Summer Seminar would give me the ability to hone my leadership skills and give me valuable experience that I could use as a Navy Midshipman and throughout life. This summer experience is an opportunity of a lifetime because it will allow me to understand and benefit from the mental and physical challenges the academy provides. Challenging myself at the Naval Academy Summer Seminar would be greatly beneficial for me because I will have the confidence and skills to make decisions
I have done a toy drive for the CT Children 's Med Center for 6th and 7th grade. NJHS is about helping our school and community. Helping with the toy drive helped me understand how to do things like that, which can help with any drives NJHS will plan in the future. I also helped with a clothing and toiletries drive for the women’s shelter. This can again help with planning any school drives that might be done by NJHS.
Jeannette Walls in The Glass Castle and her siblings had a lot of trouble fitting in and trying to avoid being bullied. When Jeannette lived in Welch, West Virginia, as always, her family didn’t have money. Jeannette lived a poor life because of this; she never got the nicest shoes, got the nicest clothes that made her look cool, or be considered the cleanest person in the school since she didn’t take a shower because of the lack or running water in her house. Jeannette often had to eat the leftover food from a trash can that people would throw away because her family couldn’t provide her food. The first girl she met at Welch was Dinitia, and she bullied her because she was poor.
In 2016, I went to the National Fall Leadership Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I also have participated in the Splash Against Cancer event to raise money for the American Cancer Society. All of these experiences have taught me that it is important to help
I also have volunteered at my stuffed bags many times helping children in the foster program. I have been very active in competitive sports since 1st
This created a great rift between me and the people that had been my friends. I began trying to hang out with friends but found they were always busy while I was home reading, waiting for an adventure. I had managed to keep a few of my friends and these people are still my friends today, but first I had to deal with being solitary for a while. After I accepted the way school, and friends were going to go I only faced one obstacle. Almost my entire life changed after my move, I had a new routine, some new friends, and a new way I had to learn.
