I was doing my internship in LaGuardia Community College. LaGuardia Community College is one of the many two year institutions that is part of CUNY, New York City’s Public Colleges. CUNY is a public university system that offers an affordable, well-rounded college education. My job title is Lab Tech and I was stationed in the B-building. I was working directly under Mercedes Acosta who is the supervisor of the Lab Techs in Math Engineering and Computer Science (MECS) department at LaGuardia Community College.
My twenty-two week long internship with Simply Flowers has been a balance of both learning and self-exploration. The internship has certainly been strengthening my goals while also providing me with dynamic life lessons. Beyond the beautiful floral materials, bows, and showiness that a retail floral shop encompasses is another world of hustle, bustle, sweat and tears. Simply Flowers is a company that has many employees deeply invested in the overall achievements of the corporation, with many employees being with the company for many
Passionate, open-minded, worldly, hard-working, leadership skills Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. She points her pale finger at a word and I say, “Legislature.” She pauses, and then repeats the word, “Legislature.”
For my Diverse Field Experience this semester, I spent fifteen hours at the Mclean County Juvenile Detention Center. This particular center was occupied by about 8-14 juveniles at a time, all depending on court dates and occupancy of other nearby detention centers. This center usually had 3 staff members working the shift every time I went, which was seven to nine on weekday afternoons. I was intrigued to go to at this time because I thought it would be the time of the day were the juveniles had no school work or other obligations to do while I was there. I wanted to see what they liked to do in the free time before bed, the only stipulation being mandatory snack time at eight pm.
This is a fun, exciting, and cheerful game. It has bunches of people watching others. It makes me feel good when I walk up to the plate. I always feel like I’m at home when I step onto the field. I play my position and have fun doing it.
I chose to come to Job Corps was because I felt like there was nothing constructive for me to do in life. I felt as if I was just sitting around doing nothing all day long. After I completed my sophomore year in high school, I went job hunting that summer. I filled out multiple applications and every last job I applied for and attended an interview with never return my calls. I realized that without a high school diploma or trade related skills, my future would be dark.
One day I will never forget is the first day I came to Job Corps. It felt unreal! Just thinking about really leaving the city and going to school; the people, food, rooms everything was on my mind. I was already prepared for the day and actually I was anxious to leave and start school.
I was ten years old when I first heard about NYU. I needed braces, and my medicaid insurance required my mother take me to NYU’s College of Dentistry to determine if I was eligible for them. I remember the first appointment vividly, for until that appointment my mother, as a single parent, rarely had the time to take me anywhere outside of our poor working class neighborhood of Corona, Queens, let alone into Manhattan. Stepping out of the train at 23rd St, had felt like stepping out onto a whole new planet. I remember at school, my teachers had always talked about about how lucky we were to live in a great city like NYC, but it wasn’t until that moment that I understood what they meant.
I have frequently tried to impact the lives of others through service, and found that each attempt has also had a profound impact on my own life. This phenomenon is especially true about my Congressional internship with the Hon. Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Leader of the House of Representatives. Working for Leader Pelosi, I learned that service is about the people who are served, and not just about abstract ideas. I learned to serve others best, not by acting as their savior, but rather as their partner- a partner that empowers them to live better lives.
By the time I was eight I had moved six times. Moving around was something that I had grown accustomed to. I didn’t like it, in fact I hated moving, but my parents always had a reason to move. Most of the time we moved because of my parent’s jobs. Normally when my parents told me that we were moving again I’d be a little upset.
Due to that, I have been appointed as mainboard in Adventure and Recreational Club for a year. In several projects carried out throughout my degree, I was the team leader that responsible for building and leading our team. These help me to strengthen my skills to work with others and appreciate others’ ideas or
During my internship program although our team had no leader, I took the responsibility to distribute the work among our team to ensure we finished on time. I am always a team player who believes in ‘Teamwork makes a Dream works’ – The benefit of accessing more ideas, working in harmony and helping each other for achieving mutual goals. I also never restrained myself to curriculum and participated in many seminars on topics related to computer science, information technology, and entrepreneurship. I underwent training in programming language and was also exposed to the practical nature of
Also consideration feedback received on my work has helped me correct my weaknesses and further develop my strengths in the future. Overall, I am satisfied with my progress, but I am also aware that there is always space for improvement and I feel prepared to go into the workplace. I believe my experiences at university have increased my employability and feel that I have a lot to offer to employers, because of the professional and personal development that has occurred in the last three
