A goal setting approach will provide effective goals and create attainable goals for employees to reach. An example of a goal oriented theory that can be implemented at Engstrom is the idea of the Path-Goal model. This theory is based on specifying a leader's style or behavior that best fits the employee and work environment to achieve a goal (House, 1974). The entire idea behind a goal based theory is to increase your employees' motivation, and satisfaction so they become productive members of the organization (House, 1974). When organizations can engage their employees to become productive members, it is only then that the employee will change their attitude and have a sense of motivation that will show when the outcome is received.

Benjamin Franklin said a quote that speaks volume. Franklin says, “If you fail to plan, then plan to fail.” This I believe is true, especially if you’re taking on a leadership role like a supervisor, manager, or even an entrepreneur. I believe to even begin to formulate a plan, an objective is needed. Setting a goal is one of the first few steps that needs to be taken for success in someone’s life.
First and foremost, leaders come in all shapes and forms, there is not one set physical mold for them, but what they all do share are certain characteristics and desires. Leadership in and of itself, is the ability to guide others, take responsibility, and share a vision that inspires and leaves others with a sense of empowerment. Evidently, it takes an exceptional leader to exhibit exceptional leadership skills. Additionally, the most prominent act that all adequate leaders demonstrate is that they are steadily engaged in enhancing their leadership skills. There have been various magnificent leaders throughout history, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Sojourner Truth, Nelson Mandela, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Leaders need to be very caring and show a genuine passion to work with others. Being passionate about the employees drives a leader to learn more about their greatest attributes and their greatest weaknesses. By learning these about each employee shows that not only does the leader what himself to succeed, but wants his employees to succeed as well. Furthermore, a leader needs to be sincerely caring on learning about its employees; it is not something that they should or can fabricate. If the employees feel that the leader does not care and they are only pretending to, then the employees will not respect the leader.
Leadership I believe leadership is the action of leading a team to reach a goal, where the leader organizes, and help structure a plan to meet the goal. Some people believe that leadership is a characteristic of the specific type of person, but I think that leadership is more than an attitude towards the goal. I identify more with de definition of the leadership of the 1940s and 1950s described in the book. “The behavior of an individual while involved in directing group activities. At the same time, leadership by persuasion instead of leadership by coercion” (Northouse, 2016 page. 5).
Leadership has been defined in a variety of ways, there are multiple authors and theorists who have tried to define and understand leadership, all leading to varying theories and conclusions, but one thing that is universally understood is the importance of effective leadership and how someone with good leadership skills can impact so many people around them. (Kakabadse and Kakabadse, 1999; Yukl, 2002; Northouse,2013) The main components that have been identified to play a role in leadership are relations between leader and subordinates, interaction form between leader and followers, the influence that the leader has, the way in which the leader behaves and finally a leader’s traits. (Yukl, 2002) These elements that make up a leader, are then used as building blocks to identify the way in which each specific leader deals with its followers.
Different scholars identified various kinds of leadership styles that affect the job performance, satisfaction and learning and development of subordinates. Warrick, D.D (1981) cited that there are no doubt variables other than a leader’s style that affect employee performance and development but leadership style plays a significant role and not to be underestimated. An awareness of leadership styles and their consequences are very important because it may either facilitate or inhabit skill development. The major theories on leadership are the traits, leadership styles and contingency theories.
