Dental Assistant Personal Statement

A dental assistant is a person who does what their job description implies. They “assist” the dentist in many procedures. Their duties are to take radiographs, assist in restorations, as well as dental extractions. These are just a few of the many responsibilities that a dental assistant entails. An assistant must be fully educated in all procedures that a dentist performs in order to efficiently assist.

The career that fascinates me and what I plan to be when Im older, is a Dental Hygienist. A dental hygienist is a stressful job, but it helps a lot of people. You are helping people get better teeth and even look better, because when people have straight pretty teeth, they seem to have an upgrade in their looks. I haven’t always wanted to be a dental hygienist, I had many other career choices. But, something about making people smile when I’m the reason they look good doing it makes me happy.

Coming from a third world country where there aren’t many opportunities for work and funding for education, proceding to nursing school was a grand opportunity. The privilege to attend a government subsidized school where top students in the region compete to get into the program that allowed only 60 students per year was indeed a blessing. As clinical rotations began, what was once considered a mere opportunity evolved into a true passion for caring as I truly love and enjoy nursing and helping people.

Ever since high school, I knew I wanted to work in the pathology field. I thought I wanted to be a pathologist. I talked to the career counselors at my school and expressed my interest. Fortunately for me, I was contacted not much after about an internship at Montefiore Medical Center.

At my physician office, the staff always dress and act professionally. I have been going to my physician since I was 6, I have even job shadowed my physician. I do not recall a time my physician or his staff has ever been unprofessional. They are always dressed in scrubs or business casual. While working several shifts in an Alzheimer's unit in a local care facility, I had the opportunity to meet a registered nurse named Sarah. Sarah had plenty of insight on what it is like being a nurse in a facility. During my observations of her duties I witnessed many things that opened my eyes as to what I want in my future career choices.

As a student at Mountain Heritage High School, I started taking classes as a freshman to learn about architecture, interior designing, and landscape architecture. Second semester of my sophomore year, I wanted to become a Dental Hygienist. I started changing my schedules to classes that would help me in dental hygiene. Thankfully, I took a college class that would ease me into the medical field. It helped me to realize that Dental Hygiene is for me. I believe my practical experience and what I’ve learned during my six years as a dental assistant at Plainview Oral sets me apart from other students. Not only for the dental skills that I have acquired, but also for the kindness and care that I have demonstrated, when working with patients in real life situations. Many patients have thanked me for my professional bedside manner both before, during, and after surgery. I also assisted patients with disabilities, and was able to exhibit a patient and positive attitude when working with them. Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to make a difference and help anyone in need that I possibly could. From the start of my childhood, I can recall helping my mother care for my great grandparents, so they would be able to live out the rest of their lives from their home, instead of in a nursing home. As a young child it was extremely difficult to live with and watch my loved ones deteriorate as they got older, as their condition got worse and worse, and saw my mother having a difficult time keeping up with caring for both of my great grandparents 24/7, it put a lot of stress on the family. I have worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant for seven years caring for patients and assisting x-ray Technicians with equipment in a hospital, nursing home (mobile x-ray used for chest examinations and picc line placement ) and assisted living facilities (mobile x-ray used for chest examinations and picc line placement ) . I thought I knew what career path I wanted for my future, with that in mind, I sought a degree in Fitness and Human Performance to continue with a career in Occupational Therapy. In this career choice, the way I got to help patients was through therapy. While taking classes, I realized Occupational Therapy is not what I truly was passionate about. I decided to take my mother’s advice and choose what I truly love to do, which is to help people all around and I believe the nursing program would be the best fit. I am currently completing my certified nurse program to proceed with a job as a patient care technician. I believe a job as a certified nurse assistant will give me a better insight while working beside nurses and observe what set of skills nurses use.

Nursing, and everything that it entails, cannot be easily described in just one simple word or phrase. It goes beyond the meaning of a profession and the stereotypical definition of treating the ill. Nursing is the “protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2010, p. 1). Therefore, it is a career that requires dedication, passion, critical thinking, and knowledge. It demands commitment and an understanding of its core values and concepts, as well as the nurse’s own personal philosophy and principles.

This is a personal statement for my application to the Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration in the Ball State School of Nursing. My personal statement provides details on my personal background and the unique impact that Family Nurse Practitioners have had on my life. I describe my undergraduate studies and how I firsthand gained interest as well as insight on the skills of a Family Nurse Practitioner. I go into detail about my aspiration to be a Family Nurse Practitioner to directly affect the patient care of a variety of patient populations. The personal statement connects qualities of my current practice as a Registered Nurse to the proficiencies of a Family Nurse Practitioner. I describe my learning habits and how the plan of study that Ball State offers coincides with my current work life. I conclude by describing the skills I attain and connect those skills to the Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration at Ball State.

I started my health care career as a nursing assistant at the young age of 16 years-old perusing the dream of one day becoming a nurse. At that time, I really had no idea what I was getting myself into and what it meant to be in the health care. I have been able to touch and impact so many different people’s lives throughout the last 6 years from patients and residents to their family members. Sometimes not even realizing that I was changing someone’s life. Although I’ve helped hundreds of people there is one person that will I will always remember.
