At the beginning of the school semester I did not think I was going to learn anything new or improve any part of my writing process. I assumed it was just going to be another class for me to drudge through as part of my degree program requirements. I soon discovered there is more involved in creating a well written paper than just putting words in print. Initially I was both surprised and disappointed in myself for turning in the Process Analysis Essay with a misspelled word in it. Furthermore, during the instructor’s critique of my essay, Ms. Flynn stated the paper “Needs more focus on a particular audience”, and more audience engagement.
Each essay I wrote took me several time to write, several drafts which show that I have improve every time I do the drafts to write a perfect masterpiece. I learned a lot of skills and techniques this quarter, which has helped me to improve and progress my writing skills for the future. I will remember the skills, techniques, and tips that professor gave us in this English class for my higher education. For example, all the time that I went to visit professor Sapozhnikov office hours to receive help on my out-of -class essays has helped me to improve, grow, and progress in my writing skills as a writer. Some of the significant changes I have made as I was progressing and growing were to develop a strong thesis to help support my claims as I write my essays, such as facts, observations, illustration, and examples.
After receiving the prompt for this essay, I hurried to the books to find textual evidence. Looking back at my decisions now, I believe that I should have spent more time brainstorming the essay so that I would not be stuck in the middle of the essay, not knowing what to write. Because I used up so much time writing my essay, I had little time to edit and revise my essay thoroughly. I was only able to skim through it, leaving numerous amounts of errors in my essay. Additionally, I would say that my essay 's quality is poor because of the lack of analysis, the lack of organization, and the grammatical errors.
Remembered our first in-class essay was a rhetorical analysis of an argument. At that time, I was unfamiliar with the idea of rhetorical analysis of an argument. So as a result, I failed my in-class essay for the first time. I felt frustrated and upset. However, I got a retry opportunity on that essay.
I knew coming into this class that I was going to struggle with my punctuations, word choice, and the overall flow of the paper. In my portfolio you will see an array of my work and hopefully the progress I have made throughout each piece of writing. The first essay you will see is my first piece of writing I created for this class. As you will notice it was very brutal. I had a lot of dead words, grammar mistakes and punctuation mistakes.
Some of my sentences were fragments with incomplete phrases. English 1010 class helped to improve and change my level of writing. The grade that I think to earn in Eng 1010 is an A. I practiced writing more frequently by keeping a daily journal. The journal helped to make writing a familiar part of my life and served as a continuing source of ideas for papers. I also wrote many helpful and important essays in
If class work was to callous I’d complain to my case manager. I’d tell her that I didn’t have enough time or that I have lots other work to do, so she would get me out of any work that I dint want to do. My case manger got me lots of extensions on projects, homework, and test. But I didn’t take advantage of any of it. My grades were dropping faster than ever, and so was my self-esteem.
Comma splices were one of the major grammar problems that I had struggled with in the past. A comma splice brings two independent clauses together, creating a run on sentence. An example of how I misused a comma is; “Coming from a small school the teachers had the materials but did not see it important enough to teach they were more worried about other things.” Once I found my mistakes, I went back and added a comma after school, a period after teach and started a new sentence with the word “They”. Having strong sentences in my story was another problem that I struggled with. When writing an essay,
Writing is one of my many concerning in my PhD program. Every time when it comes to writing I feel nervous and stressed. I actually I used to love writing in my first language and I was good at it. Nevertheless, writing in English is another experience and quite difficult. To be honest I tried to avoid the class at first time, even though we have to do writing in other classes.
I struggled a lot with that lesson because I was so used to my old ways that I did not want to learn that actual right ways. I eventually got over my stubbornness and learned the rules for where to put the apostrophe. The knowledge in this course has helped me write my research paper for other college class, Dual General Psychology. The knowledge I learned from this class I used a lot to help me write my research paper in there. I think without the knowledge from this class I would not have done as well as I did on that paper.
