Within my internship, I was required to hand in an advocacy essay, a book report and a report. At the beginning of the internship, I did not have a clue about what I was going to write in these tasks and I was wondering if my supervisor would assign me topics I needed to write and book I needed to read. However, when I talked to my supervisor, she said that I could do any topics and read any books I liked, as long as it was related to business of the organization. I realized I could not act like a primary student that I could not wait for others to assign me task. It was a good timing for me to review what I did in the past one and a half months and searched for any topics interested. Finally, the topic of my advocacy essay was decided: "Why …show more content…
Another problem happens in Taiwan is that poor students, who need to afford their own tuition fee, lack of cultural capital, they fail to afford any extra fee for attending tutorial school or having extra-curricular activities. Therefore, they have lower chances to enter those well-known schools(usually public universities) are low. I think that Hong Kong also had similar situation that through examination system, for students who have time to revise and have money to go to tutorial school have a higher chance to enter university. However, since most universities provide both UGC-funded degree and non UGC-funded degree, difference appears in types of degree student are admitted to, not the university itself, however, in my opinion, the situation is the similar since most students are admitted to UGC-funded degree by public examination, many of them attended different tutorial courses when they were in high school, which required a large amount of money. So, for students from low-income family are hard to be admitted to UGC-funded degree unless they are really clever and
The schools that are located in higher socioeconomic areas obtain much greater funding due to the parents earning more and therefore being able to fund the school better. In today's society, the leading cause for not obtaining a higher education is the cost of education and therefore Americans who have better upbringings usually receive the best education there is to offer and often choose to seek higher education because they are able to. The effects that are reflected from these financial variations between people of higher socioeconomic backgrounds and ones of people who are not as financially well off inevitably build barriers for the individuals who endure lower education. Not growing up with financial freedom and therefore not being able to afford college has a large impact on the individual's life as an adult. These individuals who are not able to receive higher education are left with low-paying jobs and health issues caused by overworking their bodies and not having the
The American public school system is arguably weak when compared to other countries, but it still functions to educate the public. The issue of inequality arises when it comes to higher education and who has access to it. Due to higher education costing anywhere from tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in the United States, it is easy to see why there is an unequal level of access to higher education. Some might argue that higher education is not necessary and that the poor can find a living without it. This is not only restricting the poor to the lower class, but is simply not true.
As an Asian American, I frequently get questioned about what kind of Asian I am. When I answer, I get mixed results. Most people who ask me that question like to assume that that I am Japanese or Korean since I love anime and listen to Korean pop. However, I am a Chinese American and I am proud of it. Since I have a Chinese background, I like to express to others about my culture.
Abstract Education of low-income families is a current tragedy in the higher education system. The low acceptance rate of elite schools reflects that students who came out from low-income families were been discriminated and has less opportunity and chances to admit in universities. It turns out that financial situation now became the most common problem that low-income student have to face. The obstacles not only occurs at admissions process, but also after when low-income students are admitted, how can the school support them to find the proper financial aid to help them succeed. If the education system of a country only served for students from upper-class, then it lose the purpose and significance of “education.”
On November 6th, I encountered a cultural disconnect with a friend. My friend is a white, female, and the same age as me. This disconnect happened on the Berkeley campus when we were walking to our next class. We were both walking and talking about what we have been up to that past week. I told her that I was swamped with midterms and projects coming up so I was “studying and dying all week.”
I was encouraged to take AP classes and Honors classes, which made it easy for me when I came to college. From facing many struggles and stresses like every other student, I still maintained a good GPA and ended up getting accepted to Holy Family University for the Nursing major. In Gary Becker, Kevin M. Murphy 2007 article, “The Upside of Income Inequality” in The American, they claim “Income inequality in China substantially widened, particularly between households in the city and the countryside, after China began its rapid rate of economic development around 1980” (581). The economic development of China improved the lives of China’s poor but the income inequality is still wide in China. Many people are still unable to receive an education.
Ever since I was young, I knew that my mother did not have it easy when she came to America. She was a strong single mother, who could not speak English, living in a foreign land. Knowing that my mother had sacrificed everything she had in hope of establishing a better future and life for me, I had to repay her. My mother used to be a nail technician inevitably she had to endure ignorant remarks from customers simply because she could not speak English.
“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots” -Marcus Garvey . And like a tree without roots, a person without culture will fail in a world so full of it. At every turn we can find a piece of culture, whether it is an American store, some recognizable logo, or even the signs were so used to seeing on the road. Culture is everywhere. You might be American, Russian, Columbian or a combination of the three, but it is always necessity for you to know where your roots are.
It could be really difficult for the under qualified students to keep up with the university standards. Many students fail their classes because the course load is unbearable to them. This leads to negative thinking and causes stress; many students choose to drop out. Students feel that they are putting a large amount of money towards their education and failing classes wastes all of
Everybody knows that there are four seasons, and everyone has their favorite one out of all of them. Mine is when the woods turns into a coloring book of orange and red, when I put a nice warm batch of hot co-co on the stove, and were all of my family comes together every year. My favorite season is fall. My favorite hobby is hunting.
When I first arrived at El Toro, i looked around and saw people staring at me as though I didn 't belong there . I felt like I was under pressure to do more than I was expedited to do. As I walked to my first class at this school, I noticed that no one had paid attention to me as though the world was spinning around me and I was frozen in the middle. As I went through the day I realized that every person at this school has a lot of potential to become a greater person. Most school wouldnt even care about the students education, they would just try to get them out of there hair.
"Where are you From?" This question has plagued me ever since I was five years old and I came to America. I was born in a country in the Middle East known as Lebanon. I have no fear in admitting it now, but I had a hard time admitting that growing up. I did not want to be different than the others.
Because I was beaten and was forced to sleep on the ground and to take bath in the cold water while I was detained by the Chinese police. I escaped from the reporting to the police and continued attending the family church activities. The Police are looking for me and will arrest me and torture me if I was returned back to China today.
As time passed, I seemed caught in a rigid routine. When I woke, my crazies made it hard to shower. During the day, I worked as an accountant for two small businesses in town. After work I came home, got high, and sat alone in my house. At night I watched Johnny Carson, and on the weekends, I visited my Aunt Claudia.
The most unique perspective I hold is my cultural background. I am a first generation immigrant, and that fact alone offers me a perspective that differs from much of the demographic at the academy. My Indian American parents have indirectly taught me about how an “outsider” looks at the United States because I have grown up learning American culture with my parents instead of from my parents; my brother and I served as a bridge between American culture and Indian culture in my home. Therefore, I have grown up more attentive to differences in culture than someone who has lived here for generations. This unique perspective has helped me throughout even my high school career with keeping an open mind -- and helping my peers keep an open mind.
