All people are subject to forces that are out of their control. These forces shape and influence their lives in ways that are big and ways that are subtle. These two forces are our nature, “The inborn, innate character of an organism,” (Rathus 56) and nurture, “The sum total of the environmental factors that affect an organism from conception onward,” (Rathus 56). In my own life, the forces of nature and nurture have both played a huge part, although nurture has played the bigger part.
A person’s nature is tied to their genotype. A genotype is, “One’s genetic makeup, based on the sequencing of the nucleotides we term A, C, G, and T,” (Rathus 56). Our genetic makeup is comprised of different traits and genetic factors that we inherit from our

A phenotype is, “one’s actual development and appearance, as based on one’s genotype and environmental influences,” (Rathus 56). I grew up in a two-parent household, with one sibling, in Union, South Carolina. The way my parents raised me, coupled with my environment, had a huge impact on me. Football is one of my earliest memories. I come from a family, and a community, that loves football. As a young child, my family would take me to see the South Carolina Gamecocks play on weekends. I would sit and watch the NFL games with my dad on Sundays. So football was something I have always been interested in due to exposure. This led to me wanting to play Stinger Football when I was old enough. From there I played high school football, where I excelled, because of my passion and the size I inherited from my nature. Because I’ve always been involved in football, I have a natural urge to stay in shape. Weekly I lift weights and jog in order to maintain my physical condition. This has led to me being very healthy and has led to good self-esteem. I feel like I look good, so I feel good. The nurture aspect I’ve had influencing my life has also been very …show more content…
My nature gave me a good foundation to build on, but much of the way I act and the things I do can be traced back to my upbringing and the environment I grew up in. Due to growing up with a sibling, and working with so many people on a football team, I’ve developed great team work skills. I’m able to work well with anyone in order to achieve a goal, which is a very important skill to have. As previously stated, my time playing football has instilled the value of being healthy in me. I work hard in order to lead a healthy lifestyle, and this has led to me being encouraging to others to make similar choices in their own lives. It has led to me preferring outside work and physical activity. The outside is where I prefer to be if I can help it. Also, working with so many people has made me very outspoken. If I have issues or opinions I share them. All of this is built on my nature, but it is the nurturing that I’ve had that’s made me into the person that I am
From the moment a person is born to the moment they die, they are constantly changing with the effects of their surroundings and their decisions. People are also influenced by their genetics, which determine hair color and other traits. These all contribute to the development of people and who they become as a whole, including their personality, values, and morals. People are influenced by many factors in life and psychology studies the human mind and its behavior throughout time. Literature and history often conveys the difference between nature and nurture in the development of people.
I have a very personal connection with sports. In fact, sports are one of the things that changed my life. When I was ten, I struggled with my weight. I know this sounds young to be dealing with weight problems, but they started young for me. Being one of the tallest kids in my grade, and the only tall girl, I already stood out like a sore thumb.
At the age of 5, I aspired to either become a professional athlete or an ESPN anchor. Ever since I could remember, I would kick a soccer ball around, dribble a basketball, or throw a baseball around with friends and family. I used to be the league champion and MVP of the team every season, but as time progressed, other competitors would rocket past in height and become the best players because of their size advantage. Although other young athletes became stronger and taller than me, it did not change the passion and commitment I had for sports.
Nature refers to all of the genes and hereditary factors that influence who people are. This varies from someone’s personality traits and to their physical appearance. Although extrinsic factors occasionally played minor roles in the decisions the Wes’s made, the emotional support of their families and connections was seen to influence their end result. What this argument overlooks and fails to notice is that nature does not determine your success, it only triggers nurture to affect the choices you make, and affect how successful you become in the
One of the most debated topics throughout the world is nature versus nurture. When psychologists debate this topic, they are studying what influences a person’s personal development. Some say that a person’s nature influences personal development while others say a person’s nurture influences personal development. A lot of people spend time contemplating which one actually does the influencing but what some do not realize is that, perhaps, both nature and nurture help shape a person’s personal development. One topic that comes up quite often is whether or not a person is born a criminal.
Participating in sports highlights my ability to work with teammates and focus in difficult situations. I have been captain on my volleyball team since seventh grade and captain on my club volleyball team for the last two years. Each year
The stress of schoolwork became overwhelming at times. The sport became a destresser and taught me patience and control on and off the field. Sportsmanship mattered, and my morals heavily influenced me. I began to self-reflect a lot, and it became a daily routine. In high school, I met many people who gave me gold advice, and I stopped giving the sport too much of myself because I feared I could break.
The nature vs. nurture debate centers on whether human behaviour and personality are inherited (nature) or acquired (nurture); in other words, whether a person’s environment or a person’s genetic inheritance determines their behaviour and personality. Goldsmith and Harman (1994) adopt a neutral position, in which both nature and nurture influence people, stating that they “believe that the fundamental issue concerns the interplay between characteristics of the individual and of the relationship” (54). Goldsmith and Harman discuss temperament and attachment for infant, with temperament being linked to the nature side of the debate and attachment being linked with the nurture side; as a result, the infant’s temperament influences the attachment bond between the infant and the mother, but the attachment bond influences the temperament of the child as well. Therefore, both nature and nurture interact with each other to produce people’s behaviour (Harman et al. 54). Andersen and Berk (1998) take on the nurture perspective, while Leary (1999) claims that nature is the determining factor of a person’s personality.
My junior year of football has been my best year getting a lot of playing time on the field and making the starting roster and excelling on the football field. The work I've put in the weight room has paid off tremendously feeling way stronger, more explosive, and quicker. As I have become stronger physically, I have also gained more confidence in my abilities as a player. This has translated to my performance on the field, as I am now more willing to take risks and make more aggressive plays as a safety on defense. Furthermore, the discipline and focus that I have learned in weightlifting have carried over to my approach to
Environment The variation among individuals that springs from their unique life experiences in specific environments; and (3) Culture- the variation stemming from disparate cultural beliefs and practices inculcated during an individual’s formative years and reinforced throughout life. Evolutionary processes, which affect genetic diversity within and between populations has the greatest effect on human variations A population’s total compliment of genes of referred to as a gene pool. In Homo sapiens, as well as in many animal populations, genes may have two or more alternate forms – a phenomenon called polymorphism. These differences are expressed in various physical characteristics, ranging from hair and eye colour to less visible difference in blood chemistry.
Soccer has kept me off the streets, it keeps me focused, maintaining agility, stamina and a side of aggression. The feeling I get when playing soccer is indescribable, the wind in my face, the crowd cheering me on..most importantly the goal - soccer relates so much to my everyday life it’s taught me teamwork and keeping myself healthy and sharp. The one person I look up to is Lionel Messi #10, the jersey that I so proudly wear every game, his motivational words, his enthusiasm really drove me to get that number and one of my favorite quotes of his would have to be “the day you think there is no improvements to be made is a sad one for anyone.” this quote is important to me because it’s a quote with such a powerful meaning, telling me that even though you may THINK you can’t get better, or do better something pushes you inside to do much greater things and I’m still learning as I go. You could ask any one of my friends or family members how much soccer has became a part of me, I want to have that name “Destiny Scott” affiliated with soccer it’s become second nature to me, soccer is a major part in my life and it has made me into the person I am
Do you ever wonder how you act the way you do? Nature vs. nurture is a discussion about whether genetics or parenting have a bigger impact on your personality. Both nature and nurture are important in how you act. Identical twins have many differences. There are many ways nurture can affect a kid 's personality.
It is pretty hard to unpack the influences in my life that have made me into the person I am today in a two-page paper. However, after thinking about it for a long time I could see a pattern of certain influences that kept coming up when I thought about who I am today and what made me into the person I am. After several unsuccessful attempts to rank the influences based on importance I decided merge them into two major themes. If I was to tell a complete stranger what the source of my skills, principles, and attitudes were; I would have to say they are attributed to my family and my extracurricular activities. These may seem like 2 very broad categories, but at the end of the day they are what shaped me into the person I am today.
Nature and Nurture Influences on Child Development Karla White ECE 205: Introduction to Child Development Instructor: Alesia Lane October 2, 2017 Nature and Nurture Influences on Child Development Describe the relationship between nature versus nurture. The nature vs. nature debate is the scientific, cultural, and philosophical debate about whether human culture, behavior, and personality are caused primarily by nature or nurture. Nature is often defined in this debate as genetic or hormone-based behaviors. Our genes determine the different traits that we have, such as eye color, hair, ear size, height and other traits.
