Growing up in a small town called Honoka’a on the island of Hawaii has taught me a lot. Hawaii emphasizes on always giving back to our community. I plan on doing that by helping kids develop skills, and fundamentals for the game of basketball. Basketball has been a part of my life since I was six years old and now I 'm going to be 18 years old, graduating high school and moving onto college. Basketball has always been a big part of Honokaa town because of players such as Kami Shigematsu , Keisha Kanekoa , Erica Tadio and many more. They all came out of the Honokaa
“He Hawai’i au mau a mau.” This translates to, “I am Hawaiian now and forever.” I believe that this represents my identity not only as a person, but as a proud Native Hawaiian. My passion sparked when I was a baby. My mother first taught me how to say basic words in Hawaiian, then I eventually attended a Hawaiian immersion school. Since I grew up in a Hawaiian based environment, I have learned to love and preserve the language. Today, there are a few Hawaiians who know our mother language because our language is gradually dying. Not only did I learn the Hawaiian language, but the Hawaiian culture. I also grew up dancing hula. When we performed, we needed a specific plant for a particular mele (song), so we had to go pick them ourselves.
After a good time in Los Angeles, we went back to San Diego where we stayed at my uncle’s house. We went to many beaches. I thought the Pacific Ocean was going to be so special but it was just like the Atlantic Ocean back at home. The water was cold and there were stingrays everywhere! It was still worth going to the beaches and having a good time with my family and making many memories that will last a lifetime. California is the place to go for spending time with your family and doing fun activities together.
Hawaii’s culture is about 1500 years old. The culture started when Polynesians voyaged to Hawaii and settled there. Hawaiian culture is based on three main aspects. Food such as broiling pig, taro and banana. Dance including the hula or as it was traditionally called Kahiko and warfare/weapons examples including the Koa and different forms of training and attach techniques. These three aspects will come to be the backbone of Hawaiian culture.
Growing up in Hawaii, the idea of community was always such a fundamental part of who I was. I have never looked at it from the perspective of how it benefited me rather how it benefitted everyone around me. Everything I have done from joining local clubs that enriched the Hawaiian culture to volunteering with the west Hawaii special olympics program have helped me become the person I am today. My family has had a huge role in making sure that I am involved with the community. They passed down their practices in paddling, environmental conservation of Kealakekua Bay and encouraging the people who need it the most.
On a nice, warm, summers day, my family and I had gone on vacation to Orlando, Florida. We stayed there for five days. One of the days we went to Sea World. It took us a little while to arrive in the park, but as soon as we were in I had to take off my shirt because it was extremely arid. Thank God I had my bathing suit on underneath my clothing. That was probably why I was so hot. Anyway, we also received some water bottles to help with the heat. So far the day was humdrum.
It was the seventh day and I saw my grandfather and dad talking my grandfather said the last word and they hugged I was so confused what was going on, but it stayed in the back of my mind the rest of the trip. On the tenth day we went to the Hollywood Studies. I rode a ride called the Tower of Terror it was one of the best rides I had been on in Disney it is a complete adrenalin rush. I also went on the great movie ride which is cool because you find out so much about old movies and I love it my sister didn’t like it. It was the final day of the trip my seventh Birthday the first thing that happened was when my parents told me that they were getting married I was so excited as well as shocked. Then my parents gave me a Brett Favre number four Vikings jersey it was awesome and even better my step dad got a matching
We stayed for only two weeks, yet they somehow became the most exciting weeks of our life. We are looking for another opportunity to visit Hawaii again. We will love to see the blue waters, the palms, and coconut trees, the buildings with such excellent architecture, the Pearl Harbor monument, and to chat with such delightful people as the friendly
I grew up in a military family so, we lived in various places. In Tennessee, it got very cold and snowed every winter. In Hawaii, we near the edge of a volcano crater. We ate mochi and musubi almost every day. I went to high school in Georgia. For me, the South was so different from the laid-back pace of Honolulu but, in some ways, they had a lot in common. Savannah, GA has beaches and islands scattered near it 's coastline. Hawaii and Georgia each are obsessed with their regional fruits. Both places are filled with military servicemen and their families. Needless to say, I don 't feel like I truly have a "hometown" but, instead, I can make any town my home.
Besides all of the water I inhaled I really enjoyed the food and drinks the resort had. We ate at the bar. We had burgers and fries. It was the best tender, juicy burger. The fries were also amazing and I had a strawberry smoothie that added the sweetness that I needed. We also stopped at a candy store and got some ice cream. The ice cream was the best I have ever had, it was cookie dough with chocolate chunks.
I was born on Oahu in February 4 2005 i was growing up in tampa Florida with my older sister and my mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, and my mom’s siblings. Me and my sister had always went to her friends house every day,one day me and my sister had went to her house and there was a rattlesnake on the outer side of her door and then me and my sister had went home.
At the end of my trip it was the last day. I was sad because i has to go home soon. On the there we got to go to a cove at the Lake of the
On the first day we got in Orlando my family and I rested from all the driving, but later that day we went to Orlando studios to walk around and look to see what rides and food they had for the next day when we come. Then we went to the hotel we were staying at and got into the pool with my grandma, grandpa, my cousin Micah, my two brothers, and my mom and dad. At first I didn’t want to get into the pool but then I seen the
My ancestors migrated so frequently, it is difficult to tell where our roots originate. From what we can tell, my family is mostly German, English, Scandinavian, and Jewish. I have relatives living everywhere in the United States from Arkansas to Pennsylvania to Hawaii. Spending most of my life in Hawaii, my family and I have adopted a lot of Hawaiian traditions. One tradition that I can remember is the 1st year luau. When you turn a year old on the islands, there is a big celebration or a luau. At the luau there would usually be a big pork roast, where they would wrap a whole hog in banana leaves and bury it deep underground with hot coals for two days. The one-year-old would usually get a ceremonial lei or flower necklace. All family
As I compose this, I sit under a tarp as the rain pours around me turning the soil to mud. It doesn’t rain often this time of the year but when it does rain, it is best to run for cover. Currently, I am working at the Makauwahi Cave Reserve on the island of Kauai in the Hawaiian Island chain. I landed at the airport with fellow classmate Melissa Rudie. It became clear as soon as we landed that we were here for a new, challenging experience.
