I can not rely on others to do everything for me. Ever since I was in fourth grade, I have had to pay for everything I wanted. I pay for my clothes, my car, my gas, my insurance, and anything that I would like. Sometimes I envy the people that get everything handed to them, but I am very glad my parents expect me to do these things because otherwise I would not be as independent. I have made a goal to help my mom cook dinner at least once a week so that I know how to make meals when I am out on my own.
My parent’s have taught me to never settle for anything less than a B. They know that in order for me to go to college and be successful, I not only have to get good grades but work hard to get there. I love a good challenge. Sometimes it’s not about the obstacles you face,
Trying to balance being a father, work to support my family, and school to escape the spiral of poverty in my community was difficult to do. As a result, I had to manage my time better without any leakage of time being wasted. I strongly believe that becoming a parent has taught my time management skills, awareness of what is around me, and how to focus and manage my priorities. With that being said, I continue to succeed academically, currently carrying a 4.0 GPA while also having more responsibilities outside of school than others. However, not only did becoming a parent held me by acquiring new skills sets, but it gave me a sense of urgency, a sense I never felt
My grandmother has always made a point to show how hard work and a good education could propel me to new opportunities and help get me a better life than she had. Input from my grandparents and parents has shaped my worldview and actions. While my family lives comfortably now, my parents did not have such a lucky life. At a young age, my mom and dad worked to help support their families and to pay or college.

I was only a high school freshman but I knew working was going to help my family. I started as a dishwasher and changed to busboy position, but quickly learned that working and being a student in high school changed things. Experiencing a normal teenage life was no longer an option. I also learned that when you work in a restaurant you have a lot of responsibilities. After some time, my father pulled me aside and told me that this was the life of someone without an education.
