I worked with young children in the resource room with the staff that included teachers, special needs assistants and an occupational therapist, who routinely visits the school. I found the experience immensely rewarding to see the progress the children made in such a short space of time. I was able to see and discuss the different exercises that the occupational therapist used with the children in order for them to make progress. This gave me a great insight into the work environment and daily tasks of an occupational therapist and it made me realise that I had the personality traits and abilities that suited this career

As I facilitated the professional learning communities, I was able to empower the teachers to create a safe, supportive environment, encouraged them to take leadership of the group, and provided a forum for creativity and growth. I found that many of my skills used for coaching were valuable in creating a safe learning community. For example, building trust and positive relationships is key for teachers to feel safe to share experiences and ideas. In addition, I empowered the teachers to define what the vision for their group would be, become leaders of the group, and generate topics to promote

CRITIQUE OF ARTICLE: I thought this to be an excellent article that provided a clear understanding of the paraeducator’s role in the classroom and how to make the educational team a success. There were several key suggestions that I know as a regular educator would be and have been excellent tools for my understanding of new strategies and teaching techniques. I can see where these would be extremely beneficial for the paraeducator as well. I love the way the authors say to include the paraeducators in setting the tone for the classroom by creating the shared philosophy together.
